An audio trip down memory lane, 12 tracks, starting light, funky n vocal then getting a bit tougher. - each a personal fav that’s stood the test of time and, with every listen, instantly taking me back to the Beginning. 

Whenever, wherever it was for you, everyone remembers their Beginning.  A halcyon period of yore when the eternal magic of the beats was amplified by that butterflies in the stomach feeling of discovering something new and unfeasibly fun – in this case, the joy of getting on it at pace until the lights come on and it’s time to venture out into the morning sun.  A Time and a Place where gender, orientation, race and occupation mean nothing, and Monday is a distant concept.

Seth Troxler recently wrote a superb piece on dance festivals in which he notes clubbing is an entirely different experience to festivals.

You had social, class, race, sexual diversity—and that’s cool. That’s what dance music culture is about. Everyone under one roof, exploring their own and each others identities. A celebration of something more, something outside of received norms.

TRACKLISTING
#1 – delightfully bouncy rework of this Dina Caroll number.

#2 – there’s several good versions of this Tune out there, this is my 2nd fav (the first just didn’t fit into the flow here)

#3 – anthem at the first major club I called home, one of the best remixes from the Masters of the Remix, they took an already great vocal and made it even better.

#4 – the only one of the 12 I didn’t pick up after hearing it on a night out.  Can’t remember where it came from but feels like I’ve had it forever, yet still fresh.

#5 – epic vocal from one of the great RnB talents, given a house makeover that just *works*.  Top drawer production skills.  First track on a 2Risque birthday CD (the one held at Sankeys).

#6 – although I’ve written about this before, words can’t do it justice.  One of the all time house greats.  Arms in the air or around each other – you’re not going anywhere.  

#7 – early hit for two of the NW’s brightest homegrown talents, a masterclass in feelgood harmony and chord progressions, underwritten by a bassline that only a bass player could have conceived.

#8 – first heard this played by Dave Booth at StudioOne11 – one of those “On way out of the club to go to next shoot, fuck that, coat off, back on the floor” moments.  Jaw dropping fusion of two dance classics – you’ll know both, I almost guarantee it – that meld as if they were made for each other.

#9 – another anthem from the early Manc days, synonymous with Master Steward holding sway over a packed Club V.  Tingle down the spine bit @ 55’30 (tho you need the buildup to it for full effect)

#10 – first heard this on a Sean Sines mix CD just after he joined Garlands.  Then seemed to hear it everywhere for months, but never tired of it.  What am I what am I what am I gonna do?

#11 – who says Britpop can’t be tough.  TV Rock on the re-imagining duties.

#12 – Suzee X @ StudioOne11.  @ 1’15’40, imagine the sensation of being carried along by the sound, almost floating on the dancefloor, surrounded by your nearest and dearest.  Immense.
