Commissioned by QVE for its performance at Carnegie Hall in 2014, "As On Wings" was inspired by the lasting bonds between the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, New York, and around the world that arose from the tragedy of 9/11. On that day, 75 trans-Atlantic flights were forced to land and seek refuge on the province’s shores; for four days, thousands of strangers were taken in by families and communities large and small. Canadian composer Leonard Enns drew his text from scripture, Lebanese writer Khalil Gibran (1883-1931), and the reflections of Leslie Kennedy, a teacher colleague of conductor Susan Quinn, whose school (Holy Heart High School in St. John's) became a shelter for hundreds of the stranded travelers.
