“Freddie’s Groove” is Crackazat in full-on jazz mode. The nod to Freddie Hubbard is clear, and Crackazat cleverly takes ideas from both the jazz legend and his legendary French sampler, Pepe Bradock for this track. The horns are deep and moody, the groove is jazz-house at its best and Crackazat’s soft vocals have the perfect amount of fragility to fit the groove. The changeover into a stabby synth section halfway through the track is a subtle reminder from the skilled producer that – even with all these musical elements – he can direct you to the front of the dancefloor with the twist of a note.

I was working in the evening part time at a record store called Harmony House in Gross Pointe, not too far from where I lived in downtown Detroit. Although I had a day job, working at the record store a few hours a week was so much fun because I got a chance to listen to and learn about new music as it arrived weekly. One of the "Gems" I discovered there was an album that was featured in our CD listening station by a new guy named Maxwell. I thought the album sounded pretty good at first but not great. I remember it was being sold for a lot less than the other CD's at the time so maybe physiologically I didn't think it was legit. But the more I listened, the more I began to fall in love with this album "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite" (1996). It wasn't getting any radio play at the time but I remember Maxwell came to play in Pontiac not far from the D. I went to the show and it was at a really small venue and it was one of the best live shows that I had witnessed up to that point. Shortly after Maxwell "Blew Up" and would come back to play at The Fox in Detroit thus beginning his reign through the brand new Neo-Soul scene. This song "No One" would come out a few years later but its still one of my many fav's from the smooth Maxwell... Enjoy!!!
