Description: This second movement of 'String Quartet 2' includes 3 complete iterations of the tune from Donegal known as 'She Moved Through the Fair,' as well as variations and echoes of the tune in other passages.

This quartet makes a profound impression with the contrast of its hearty, energetic first movement and its somber folksong conclusion. I can't help but feel that there is some comment on the human condition here, and it is perhaps not an optimistic one.

Third and last movement of the most recent quartet for A Congeries. All titles are quotes from Keats' 'Ode to a Nightingale'.

1st movement completed 20 Aug 2021. The somewhat subdued ending points toward the 2nd mvt, which incorporates a plaintive (and famous) Irish song from Donegal.

Only the Strong Rise

This is a very short composition for what is a very long and convoluted story; I’ll try my best to compress it into this small track description. 

It’s been nearly 15 years since I found Myrtle House, a very modest Victorian two-up-two-down town house where I live and also where I work. All of the music I post has been written, recorded and mastered here in my studio which also doubles as my library where I have six or so huge bookcases that hold what’s left of a lifetime of being a “bookie” as well as a “muso”. Now, sadly, it seems I have to leave as my landlord is selling the property and neither me nor my books nor my music have anywhere else to go.  

Like most aspects of my life, this issue resulted in a composition, the title of which comes from a framed print of the original cover of an essay by one of my most beloved of authors, Virginia Woolf, which hangs in my studio. It’s also probably the final composition for a while as everything, including my studio, needs to be packed up very shortly.

Thank you for listening and liking my music; it helps both in terms of emotional support and, in a very minor way, financially; I think each play earns me around $0.01 - definitely riches beyond rubies!

FRAGMENTUM - Update 25/10/2025

Completed. This incorporates two Irish reels, 'The Country Girl's Fortune' (a Connemara reel) and a shorter reel from Clare, as well as some reeling strains added by myself. It's very short, but would serve well as an amusing and exciting encore.
