This recording was made by the SuperCam instrument on NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover on Feb. 19, 2021, just about 18 hours after landing on the mission’s first sol or Martian day. The rover’s mast, holding the microphone, was still stowed on Perseverance’s deck, and so the sound is muffled, a little like the sound one hears listening to a seashell or having a hand cupped over the ear. Just a little wind can be heard.

First Audio Recording of Sounds on Mars

Blazars are galaxies whose central supermassive black hole, weighing millions to billions of times our Sun’s mass, blasts a particle jet almost directly toward us at nearly the speed of light.

This track sonifies a decade of gamma rays from the blazar TXS 0506+056 detected by NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope between August 2008 and May 2018. The percussive sounds match the energy of the detected gamma rays. Unprecedented flaring activity began in April 2017 and continued for months. Blazar Flare Sonification

This track sonifies the Chandra Deep Field South, the deepest X-ray exposure ever made, comprising over 81 days of observations with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. 

Moving from bottom to top, the colors in the image determine the tones played. More specifically, colors toward the red end of the rainbow rumble as lower tones, while colors containing more purple play as higher ones. White areas in the image are heard as white noise. Almost all of the sources represented in the image are black holes or galaxies. Most of the former are supermassive black holes that reside at the centers of galaxies. The wide range of musical frequencies represents the full range of X-ray colors collected by Chandra from this region. Note that as the piece scans upward, the stereo position of the sounds provides clues about the position of the sources from left to right.

This album will take you to a secluded beach on a wild, tropical island. The sheltered waters on the lee side of the island are exceptionally calm; the sea is like glass, mirroring the tropical sky. Gentle waves roll ashore, and as they recede, coral fragments tinkle delicately in the backwash.

Among the coral debris, hermit crabs scurry busily, carrying their crazy variety of shelly homes. From the rainforest behind come the occasional calls of lorikeets, mynahs and fruit pigeons.

This is a tranquil recording from a remote and idyllic location.

Black Hole 'Sound' in the Perseus Galaxy Cluster

Measurements collected by the Waves instrument aboard NASA’s Juno spacecraft during its close flyby of Jupiter’s moon Europa on Sept. 29, 2022 have been converted to an audible frequency. The variation of frequency of the plasma waves observed near Europa can be heard as the plasma density varies.

ORIGINAL Citation (Oct 2014): Rosetta’s Plasma Consortium (RPC) has uncovered a mysterious ‘song’ that Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko is singing into space. The comet seems to be emitting a ‘song’ in the form of oscillations in the magnetic field in the comet’s environment. It is being sung at 40-50 millihertz, far below human hearing, which typically picks up sound between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. To make the music audible to the human ear, the frequencies have been increased in this recording. Enlightenment is a multi channel 3D projection in response to the historical Cairns library and the natural environment so dominant in the far North. The project ran over two consecutive festivals and developed over this period combining digital video, 3D animation, projection mapping, photography and sound to create awe-inspiring 3D illusions, depicting some of the most distinctive aspects of the region’s wildlife, from giant barramundi to brilliant Ulysses butterflies.. The work draws upon distinctive natural elements relative to Cairns and this region, provides a moment of synergy between nature and architecture, The work includes a commissioned spoken word component by local writer Jessica Hart, responsive to the influences of place on our condition and referencing how inspirational the natural world can be in our pursuit of creativity, Knowledge and wisdom. The library is of cause an essential place to explore and share such ideas .The sound design included real recordings of local species to accompany the visuals

EnLIGHTenment - Ocean and Earth

A recording to celebrate the summer solstice in Australia. This recording was captured this year while working on the wildlife documentary Dino Bird  produced by WildBear Entertainment for National Geographic. An amazing prehistoric looking bird living in the Wet Tropics and known for having the lowest frequency call of any bird. New research from the up-close Grand Finale orbits of NASA’s Cassini mission shows a surprisingly powerful interaction of plasma waves moving from Saturn to its moon Enceladus. Researchers converted the recording of plasma waves into a “whooshing” audio file that we can hear -- in the same way a radio translates electromagnetic waves into music. Much like air or water, plasma (the fourth state of matter) generates waves to carry energy. The recording was captured by the Radio Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument Sept. 2, 2017, two weeks before Cassini was deliberately plunged into the atmosphere of Saturn.

The Stanford Experimental Physics Lab sonified data from the European Space Agency and NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). This humming sound captures the Sun’s natural vibrations and provides scientists with a concrete representation of its dynamic movements.

Chandra X-ray Observatory: Galactic Sonification

This set of sounds from the surface of Mars were recorded by the microphone on the side of NASA’s Perseverance Rover on February 20, 2021. In the first set, sounds from the rover itself dominate. In the second set, the sound was filtered to make sounds from Mars more audible. You can hear a little wind in the second set. 
 
This is the first time a Mars rover has been equipped with a microphone. The images in this video were taken by Perseverance's Navigation Cameras, or Navcams, on the same day as the microphone sounds, Feb. 20, 2021.
