After a four year wait, Stockholm three-piece <b>Museum of Bellas Artes</b> cut the ribbon on their eagerly anticipated debut LP, 'Pieces', out 11th November on Best Fit Recordings.

Full-bodied, baroque and seductively melodramatic, 'Pieces' trails the darker climes of luxe-pop, melting disco beats into church organ, sustained synth pads into chiming bells and pistols-at-dawn guitars into post-punk bass lines. 

Alice Luther's red velvet voice flails like a Grand Dame treading the Boards - the operatic electronica of opener 'Fantasia' paying its dues to Goldfrapp's Felt Mountain. 'Twine' scurries along in a balearic whirlwind and the haunting presence of 'Maze of Shells' lingers like a Victorian ghost. 

'Bear Cubs' and 'Swan Boats' flex their rhythmic muscles with guitar and never has a 'Relapse' sounded more enticing. It's all brought to a suitably theatrical conclusion with album clincher 'Glass'.

Childhood friends Joanna Herskovits, Leonard Öhman and Alice Luther assembled the band back in 2009 and released the neon-flecked debut EP 'Days Ahead' a year later. 

As they up the sonic histrionics and dim the lights, forget everything you thought you knew about Swedish pop and start over.

Museum of Bellas Artes’ debut album ‘Pieces’ will be released on 11th November, 2013 via Best Fit Recordings in digital and limited edition vinyl formats.

It was a long time coming, but last month Fatima finally dropped the follow up to her debut album Yellow Memories. And Yet It’s All Love—released on long time home Eglo—found the artist’s newly matured vocals taking centre stage amongst production that was slightly more paired back. It revealed her very real talents on the mic and her ability to go from buttery smooth slow jams to resoundingly chest pumping neo-soul anthems via curiously innocent lullabies and grown-up jazzy invention. Covering a wide musical and emotional scale, the record mixed up all consuming seriousness with the same sense of fun and playfulness that characterises her essential radio shows on NTS.

They are treasure troves of r&b, hip hop and neo-soul that can be 20 years old or not yet released, and that’s what she serves up on her ‘Maple Motivation Mix’ here. It’s an intimate and personal listen that offers a window into the artist’s wide array of influences. Like Fatima’s own rich musical output, it variously bumps and grinds, melts your heart or empowers you, and will keep you coming back for more time and time again.

The second edition of Dekmantel’s foray into the era-defining, trans-Atlantic, cult techno label that is Djax-Up-Beats, comes another re-issue of classic 90s cuts. The Dutch label was responsible for releasing some of underground’s most foundational dance music, mixing together Chicago and European artists alike, and acting as the launchpad for some of today’s biggest producers. Featuring offerings from luminaries such as Felix Da Housecat, and Glenn Underground, alongside veterans such as Steve Poindexter, and DJ Skull, this second EP highlights the classic label’s old-school’s sound, while showcasing its diverse range, from dubbier, ambient moments, to wall-thumping, body crushing house force. Timeless music, repressed, and re-released for a new generation of DJs who covet the classic machine music.

The second re-issue EPs, offer a more introspective look at the label’s earlier releases. Leading Volume 2 is Terrace’s 'Bewitched', to which DJ Richard has described as being the defining track of the label’s beginnings with its "dreamy, Detroit-style techno mixed with the harder rave elements of Northern Europe”. Glenn Underground’s bass-roller 'Real Space' weaves together soulful passion and Chicago prime beats, while Felix Da Housecat’s Temptation — originally from 1993 — gets a well earned re-release, reminding us of the soulful, deep and lustful energy the producer once had. China White, whose name doesn’t get banded around as much as it should nowadays, see their ethereal hit 'Theme from the Underground' get another opportunity to bliss out the more upbeat rave community.

The energy turns darker with Frank de Groodt’s The Operator, breaking the outer-most barriers of electro-techno, with 'The Mind Strike'. Chicago and Dance Mania’s Steve Poindexter turns out rolling, dance-energy bomb 'Body Jam', while Mike Dearborn’s deliverance of unreal, dry techno in 'Deviant Behaviour' runs aplomb with classic drum-machine pulses, claps, and uncomfortable, yet punishing melodies. DJ Skull’s 'Don’t stop the beat' rides the EP with gushings of hand claps, and gentle, early 90s warm techno color, that transport you back to a time of more informed, and conscious electronic musings, a feeling that embodies Djax’s heyday. 

Founded in Eindhoven at the turn of the 90s, Djax-Up-Beats quickly earned an international reputation for being a key source of Chicago house, acid techno, and floor-filling, heavy-hitting, straight up underground 12”s. It’s a sound that spawned the sonic aesthetics of today, and can be heard in the left field techno productions of the likes of Bjarki, Salon des Amateurs and other erstwhile analog junkies.

5 Years of Love On The Rocks

Paramida made her name as an integral part of the new Berlin school of DJs embracing a more expansive sound, a charismatic and eclectic idealism beyond the steady, straight-forward pulse of house and techno. Following five years at the city’s diverse OYE Records store, and alongside an international schedule of DJing, she has spent the previous five crafting her Love On The Rocks label in that same generous spirit. 

Now, with half a decade passed, she has called upon many of the label’s previous associates, alongside some new faces, to curate a four-disc compilation produced upon the adventurous and personal principles upon which the label was founded. The title of the collection is ‘Supergau’, which Paramida explains to mean "A disaster beyond all expectations". It’s a typically pithy title for a label that’s found a unique groove between dancefloor fulfillment and surprising turns, keeping it’s dedicated buyers and open-minded DJs on their toes, just as Paramida likes it. Still, it hasn’t always been easy.

“Those 5 years didn't fly by,'' admits Paramida. “I had moments of doubts and thoughts about stopping the label. But something inside didn't let it happen. So whatever I'm doing with the label is something that is so deeply rooted in me that I'm not ready to stop yet. This compilation represents five years of ups and downs, tears and joy, growing, losing and finding itself again. I've never really questioned or reflected it much. The label has been pretty much a mirror of my personal life, my taste at a certain point and the artist or person that was involved in my life at that particular stage of my life. As such, I want to give this first chapter of Love On The Rocks a nice closure.”

Some artists on the compilation return to the fold, such including Fantastic Man, Massimiliano Pagliara, Violet, ELLES, Etbonz, Dirk Leyers and Alex Kassian. Others are featured for the first time such as Francis Inferno Orchestra, Bartellow and Eric Duncan. And others again are a complete surprise, including Kornél Kovács, Daniela La Luz and Hermann Kristoffersen. ‘5 Years of Love On The Rocks’ presents an opportunity for artists to explore the charismatic boundaries between house, disco, new wave and acid, with the shared goal of sheer dancefloor bliss.

“Every record I put out felt like a message I'm sending out into the universe”, explains Paramida. “And everyone featured on this compilation is someone I deeply connect with, even though it's a pretty unexpected mix of artists. Here’s to the next five years.”
