Over the past decade, Santiago-born, Mexico-based producer @tomasurquieta has harnessed his own brand of noise. His sounds are heavily textured, often distorted, and range from hammering techno bangers to intense flurries of drums and caustic synths. It is protest music that gave rise to his excellent 2018 long player Duenos de Nada and has continued to challenge the system ever since with a mix of futuristic and political, anarchic and metallic 12"s. 

This week's podcast was recorded on a cold night in Brooklyn and the idea behind it was simple but effective, says Tomás. "I put together some new and old tracks I’ve played in my recent gigs." As such it is a fine snapshot of what to expect from him in the club right now - bold rhythms, dystopian moods and plenty of industrial, ambient and IDM influences. It's a physical selection that is constantly on the move and densely packed.

An upcoming artist of Georgia's Tbilisi, @Kraumur as an artist working tirelessly as a radio host and DJ within her local community.
Following our DETECT ethos, our next instalment directs the spotlight to an exciting international artist. 

Still relatively new but dedicated to her evolution, she quickly gained a trademark style that never fails to connect with her audience. With an eye for experimental tracks that suit the dancefloor, her meticulous selections are unpredictable yet always vigilant of the crowds she plays to.

Skimming between stripped-back breaks, bassy techno and all manner of rhythms, Kraumur sent over an exclusive mix for our next DETECT.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.

I included a handful of all-time personal favourites, and most of the tracks marked “unreleased” are presumably up on Bandcamp by now so go show the artists and labels a bit of love if you’re feeling it.
