Toronto-based musician David Psutka aka ACT! (fka Egyptrixx / Anamai / Ceramic TL) returns with a stunning debut album, ‘Strange Bounty / About Life’ on his own Halocline Trance imprint - out on the 3rd June. 

Speaking about the record Psutka (ACT!) says, “‘Strange Bounty / About Life’ is in some ways my most refined record. The previous period of solo material was quite experimental and spontaneous, whereas this was written slowly and with more intentionality, and as a result, feels very clarified. Robin Dann of Bernice, and Alanna Stuart of Bonjay both contributed lovely vocal work to the record and it was written and performed primarily on guitar. I think it is fair to call this an 'experimental guitar record’.”

The album showcases a new aesthetic for the ACT! project, leaning more towards psychedelic and ecstatic groove - feelings of familiarness and warmth running throughout. 

On the latest single to be released from the album, ‘Lotto’, calls you to attention right away with the dizzying pinball sound before leading into an ethereal guitar riff and silky vocals. The track showcases the two opposing sides to ACT!’s sound where the softness echoes through via the buttery voice whilst hard electronic instrumentation stutters underneath.

Beyond The Struttosphere return to Gouranga in full force, two years following the release of their lauded debut EP, New Frontier. The title track of Astral Riders imagines the two cosmonauts burning through the atmosphere to a soundtrack of chugging metallic guitar stabs, syncopated arpeggiators and celestial 808 hits, coupled with an extraterrestrial vocal sample from the 1969 cult biker film, Easy Rider. The track builds in momentum, before propelling into cloud nine with a fully tranced-out crescendo. Remix duties are provided by two maestros of the scene: Mexican dark wave legend Rigopolar applies his signature formula to the original, stripping it back to its core components, and bolstering it with cosmic synths, driving motorik percussion and a Donna Summer style bassline that ramps up the groove. Israeli house aficionado Juvë delivers a second remix that draws on elements of deep house and comes loaded with distorted FX, ethereal pads and reverberating low-end synths that culminate in a spectacular drop. 
The second offering, Canyon Grit, is as gnarly and raw as its name suggests: this is full throttle dancefloor banger, commanded by a dynamic resonant chug bassline, reinforced with cutting snares, driving hi-hats, reverbed guitar loops, and Hendrix-inspired psychedelic 303 sequences that will leave you gasping for air. The original is backed by a stellar remix from Tiempo De Maldad, another Mexican stalwart, whose take cruises through hyperspace in unfaltering abandon, with kinetic drum workouts and spacey synths that navigate the tune to its tripped-out conclusion. 
The final track, Set Lasers To Stun, comes laden with intoxicating solo guitar recorded live on a vintage Stratocaster, deployed with euphoric Rhodes piano, galactic laser zaps, twanging new wave guitar chords, and the BTS trademark chug bassline. The EP closes with a remix from Rebolledo, head honcho of Burning Man’s Mayan Warrior and one half of the legendary Pachanga Boys. His contribution remodels the track into a dark and hypnotic desert trip, with dusty FX and dreamlike melodic pads that will no doubt teleport dancefloors into the stratosphere.

UK musical pioneer Subject 13 have leaned into many genres over his 30-year career, from jazz-step and tough-edged drum & bass to the hip hop sounds of 'Dripping Sauce', his latest single for R&S Records.  Produced in collaboration with Conscious Route, the London born rapper, MC, poet and signer songwriter, this new release drops it raw and real, spitting conscientious lyrics over a hard-hitting rhythm plugged into a minimal and bleepy production.

For our sixth entry in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from Vancouver's @zanderbaerg

Zander (they/them) is a Vancouver-based DJ known for their hard, fast and uncompromising vinyl sets. They draw inspiration from the avant-garde, harsh noise, Birmingham and Detroit techno scenes, among many others. With a hint of a punk attitude, Zander is able to use DJing as the vessel to carry their artistic expression. Zander is also one half of ZOV: a live improvised modular techno duo that also features Vancouver powerhouse Overland. You can expect a raw and honest sound that captures the essence of techno at its purest.

Zander describes the mix as 'When I went to record this mix I realized I was having an identity crisis. The last time I recorded a mix was before the pandemic started and I was finding it hard to relate to who I was as an artist then. Feeling the imposter syndrome weigh heavily on my shoulders, I set out to rediscover what defined me as a creative and how I can translate my artistic expression through DJing. I think this mix encompasses my current feelings with dance music and continues on with threads I have established in my past DJ sets. I like it hard and fast and I want to make you dance. This was recorded at Deep Blue studios during a rare Vancouver snow storm, enjoy. - Zander.'
