Here comes R-Zone 5, the next release in the series, this time coming from a pair of established producers who work both solo and as a duo (and one of them runs a prominent German label), but ones whose names shall not be shared in public. 

The first track is ‘Jungle Fever’ a slowed down, dub-culture tinged track of sampled loon bird calls, tooting melodies and raw metallic drums that churn deep down below. It’s the sort of track that needs to be played in summer, ideally with a reefer on the go. 

‘Down-E rave’ again calls on druggy references for its inspiration – this time E’d-up dancefloors in the mid-nineties. It’s a lazy beat with curious vocal stabs, prominent drum breaks and plenty of deft synth work that takes you up, up and away in style. 

The flip-side sees two versions of the same track. ‘nRg Zone (Happy Mix)’ is a rinsed out and tripped out track of streaming melodies, more old school and roughhewn drums and plenty of bright, pixelated melodies stabs as well as softer background pads. The Moody Mix of the same track operates much more down in the darkened doldrums. It seems to have heavy heart and sultry mood as the percussion churns on beneath golden streaming pads and like everything on the R-Zone series, is stuffed with plenty of very real atmosphere.

R-Zone 05 - Jungle Raver / Down-E Rave / nRg Zone (Happy Mix/Moody Mix) (Out Now!)

The R-Zone series continues down its avant-garde path with a next EP from another established producer but one who’s name will not be revealed, as is the way with this series. 

The jacking electronics of ‘Rebecca In The Hall’ goes first with a whipping bassline, plenty of jarring machine sounds and nebulous sci-fi synths. The tension is broken with the sensuous cry of a female vocal and from there you are elevated to a higher level of good-time vibes. ‘Romijn Ravine’ then takes us back to the old school – bristling drum breaks, hardcore stabs and crushed hits all mesh around one another to form a dusty, grainy intergalactic sonic trip.

Closing out the trio of tracks is ‘Night Level II’ which is another fully analogue jam where wiry synths and jacked-up kick drums hustle and bustle with a kinetic energy that sucks you in and drags you along for the ride. It’s another fierce EP with a dense make-up, but one that has many hidden pleasures within.

R-Zone 06 - Rebecca In The Hall / Romijn Ravine /Night Level II

The much loved R-Zone series continues apace here with three more rough analogue jams for its seventh release.

'If U Going Thru Hell Keep Going' is a paranoid, angsty bit of house jack with a busy synth line, hard hitting percussion and plenty of muddy, murky atmosphere. 'Emojako' is even more unhinged and off filter with its weird hooks, dusty hi hats and intense drum workouts. It's a physical one that will fuck with your mind as it changes direction freely, and final track 'Subatomi' is just as freaky and left of centre. The synths are lively and charming, spraying about above a cacophony of woody percussion and heavy drums. It's grainy and roughhewn but groovy and catchy at the same time.

R-Zone 07 - If You Going Thru Hell Keep Going / Emojako / Subatomi

With this release the mysterious but much loved R-Zone series hits its 8th outing. Still no one quite knows who is behind the music, but that doesn’t matter when it’s as fresh and arresting as this. 

Opening this EP’s account is ‘Percept’, a kinked techno rhythm drowning in scraping percussion, grainy synths and gallivanting basslines. Once you penetrate the textural mist that shrouds the whole arrangement, it’s a heady place to be. ‘We Sad II” is a gurgling acid jam with rattling machine sounds, rubbery basslines and plenty of sonic grit and grime, whilst closer ‘303909’ makes plenty of use of the machines mentioned in its title to conjure up a weighty, dubbed out vibe that’s thick with mystic ambiance and propped up by well swung drums. 

The music on the R-Zone series is as cloaked in intrigue and mystery as the artists who make it: now at its eight chapter, the story continues to confound and impress in equal measure.

Just a year after starting and the irrepressible R-Zone series is up to release number 9. Again this time there is no real word on who is behind the music, but again it is fierce, searing techno for darkened dancefloors. 

The barrelling, stomping ‘Down You Go’ opens this EP with blocky metal beats, spares synth lines which bleed in and out of focus and plenty of rattling percussion. ‘Give Me More’ goes a little slower and deeper, with rubbery kick drums forming the base of the track as molten and melted acid gurgles percolate up through the mix. On the flipside, ‘Too Much TV’ is a more elastic groove that undulates up and down with short little acid stabs buried deep within as the bass drops in and out. Supple and propulsive, it’s arresting stuff that gets completed with final track ‘VHC Beats’.

Whichever producers are behind the R-Zone series always manages to come up with the goods, so if you like fizzing, textured techno that pulls no punches, this remains the series for you.

R-Zone 09 - Down You Go / Give Me More / Too Much TV / VHC Beats

The much loved and mysterious R-Zone series rolls on here with another new EP, this time made up of three more moody and atmospheric cuts.

First track 'Visions Of A Deepweb' is a slow and predatory crawl through a barren cosmic landscape. Synths spiral around you and encase you in paranoia as heavy drums trudge out a groove below. The track grows ever more stormy and turbulent, never letting your attention wane. 'Xochisa Wakening' is a much more spacious and less intense affair with no drums, just dripping water; tons of reverb and groaning deep space ambient sounds that suggest you are in total free fall. Continuing with the intergalactic feel, the final track 'Positive Sequence' sounds like a voyage through space, with heavenly pads adding tons of beautiful atmosphere, gently ticking percussion driving things along and plenty of little sonic details all drifting by in the background. Various cinematic images play out in your mind throughout this EP, and that makes it all the more appealing as a result.

R-Zone 11 - Visions Of A Deepweb / Xochis Awakening / Positive Sequence

For their next trick, the anonymous R-Zone crew turn out three darkly engaging cuts that once again look back to a ravey heyday for their inspiration, but at the same time conjure up some refreshing contemporary ideas that will no doubt have dancefloors in raptures. 

EP opener 'Onefourone' is an epic end of the night track with big drums, melancholic chords and a sombre sense of finality that makes you think the world could end anytime. 'Gravity' sounds like an invasion from space, with falling synth lines, buried deep drums and clattering percussion all making for a foreboding atmosphere. 

'Stolen Birds' fills up the flip side with a groaning and darkwave synth line and cooing birdcalls. As big hi hats come in and glassy tinkles fill in the airwaves, it turns into a stormy affair that is both dancey and cerebral at the same time. As always with R-Zone, this is compelling, creative music that bristles and brims with all sorts of occult charm.

The much loved, slightly mysterious but always firing R-Zone series rolls on to its 12th release here. This time the Dutch collective serves up five searing club tracks that are as raw and energetic as ever and look back to a 90s UK heyday for their inspiration. 

First up is Beginning of Life, with old school loon bird calls, lots of rave intentions and nebulous pads all creating a sweaty atmosphere atop rough hewn drums. Hardcore Track is a frenzied cut with  pixelated melodies, chopped up vocals and machine gun like drums that pull in many directions at once. 321 then has classic [pitch shifted hardcore vocals, rinsing, dusty old break beats and cantering bass, then Red Rave #1 is all whacked out and tinny, with skeleton drums jostling next to vocal stabs and dark and ominous spoken word snippets and Red Rave #2 gets all jungle by going deep on some rolling, shuffling drums and rich, rubbery bass. For fans of old school, hardcore and rave this Ep will certainly make you smile and, of course, dance!

Keeping up the pressure with their anonymous EP series, R-Zone now offer up three more cuts of purely dance floor aligned action. 

Opener You Wear The Mask Of The Beast is a mysterious cut with a spooky lead synth, subtle, buried deep drums that are full of implicit energy and build to a heady peak. Raw textures, unfamiliar patterns and perfect back room vibes all pervade. Salt Volatile This Sucka is a slow mo but chugging track with frazzled synth lines, atmospheric pads and curious melodies all spiralling above lazy, ramshackle drums. Last but not least, Arrowhead is a sludgy, dirty, sleazy groove that sounds broken. It’s a fantastic fusion of fucked up machines sounds that keeps you on edge throughout. Once again here R-Zone have confounded all expectations with their left-of-centre electronica.

The mysterious and much loved R-Zone series hits release number ten here with another compelling three track affair. As ever, we don't know the artists behind the tracks, but as ever, they are fresh and freaky propositions that bottle up a world world of influences from rave to acid.

Up first is 'The Waters of Lethe', a busy and dense track full of blurting machines, metallic percussive patterns and insistent drum patterns. It's one for big dark warehouses and is sure to grab headlines. Then comes 'Desert Schematics', which has slithering snares whipping about like a loose hose pipe as mid tempo drums and arpeggiated bass do a physical dance below. Lastly, 'Broken Pyramid' marries nervy chord stabs with old school rave sounds, a twisted vocal and lots of techno energy. All in all these three tracks are tough to characterise, but rest assured they are all designed for maximum dance floor impact.

R-Zone 10 - The Waters Of Lethe / Desert Schematics / Broken Pyramids

New mysterious heat from the R-Zone vaults!

The R Zone series excels at raw, inventive, off kilter club music from a range of mysterious artists. That fine tradition continues once more here with another four cuts of inventive music that takes cues from techno, IDM, acid and house. 

Lumidei is all wonky drums and out of time hits and is a brilliantly weird cut full of spacious atmospherics. Mynheer is built on a bed of broken beats, knocking hits and metallic textures that all tumble and fall around loosely and invitingly. Dédale d´or then takes you on a trip through the outer edges of the universe with rough hits and drums scraping out a groove as big, bold synth chords add an air of melancholy and finality to proceedings. Things close out with Skagerrak, a perfectly roughhewn drum track that is backed with sensuous synths and lots of cosmic moods. Arresting and compelling, this yet is another unique R Zone release that cannot fail to stand out in any DJ set. 

R-Zone 16 - Lumidei / Mynheer / D'édale D'or / Skagerrak

The mysterious but widely acclaimed R Zone series roll on to a 15th EP now with a new four track release that is as essential as ever. 
Opener Hired Gun is a tough and raw concoction with coarse, snappy snares, rough drum pings and lots of abrasive texture all making for a physical listening experience.  Midwinter is a deeper and more emotive jam with warm pads dampening down icy hi hats and busy synth work. It is fresh and original and sounds like little else, then Captive gets all deep and space-y with smeared pads and slick metallic hits tied together with a molten acid line. Lastly, Exile is five blissful and beautiful minutes of atmospheric, intergalactic electronic sounds that really take you to another place. 

R-Zone 15 - Hired Guns / Midwinter / Captive / Exile

New Year = new R Zone. This time the revivalist rave crew, brutal techno lovers and broken beat brothers—whoever they may be—serve up three more tantalising tracks that are designed simply for high dance floor impact. 

‘Greatest Enemy’ is first and lives in a deep space world where jungliest percussion and pummelling drums are offset with swirling pads and warm synths. It’s an emotional roller coaster that gets followed up by ‘Spike’, a manic and prickly speaker blaster with wild melodies and rave stylings all barely continued by punch and off beat kick drums. Last of all, ‘Faramore Agent’ is in your face with its frazzled bass, skittish percussion and vocal stabs all panning about left and right. One again this is brilliantly all over the place and impossibly visceral music designed to devastate all who hear it.

R-Zone is a new label launched by Global Darkness. Who is involved isn't exactly a secret, those who feel so inclined can piece the information together quite easily. It is however irrelevant to the concept of R-Zone, which would like to shift the focus away from namedropping and perception based on hype around individual artists and bring it back where it belongs; in the lap of the music.

The sounds exhibited across each track are fresh offerings that combine brightly coloured synths, swirling pads and non-standard beats into captivating and kaleidoscopic soundscapes that constantly evolve from start to finish. A cosmic, intergalactical energy pervades each release, transporting you to a world far away from here. The rest of the tell can be told by R-Zone themselves:

“Have you ever stood in a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere with complete strangers desperately looking for a party that may or may not exist? Have you ever wandered around a bombed out illegal warehouse rave at X in the morning on an E come-down? Have you ever stood in limbo between the click of a strobe or between the shards of a dense orange haze that emanates from a fog machine? Floating away on never ending waves of music and substance induced - we may as well call it - LOVE? Where for one brief moment it didn't matter who you are and what you do and how you look or how many scene-points you have? If so then you will remember the R-Zone as a shadowy place that never fully exists yet is always waiting. “

“In the whip of a snare, the beat of a kick, the wail of a string or the rush of an arpeggio, in those heart pounding moments of anticipation and in the glorious release of a drop. And then, as those frozen moments echo out and fade into a corner of space-time where nothing seems quite real, you descend among your peers, feeling somehow richer and more enlightened - as if you have been touched by something. You know it can make the world seem an empty place, a barren wasteland devoid of endorphins, where neurotransmitters merely twinkle but never shine. Just remember you are not alone. Others have entered the R-Zone with you and together we may embrace its infinity - as we enter into a new age.”

R-Zone 03 - Pain/Dead (OUT NOW!)

For the fourth R-Zone, we serve up three more tracks of fizzing atmospheric house. First track ‘Exclamation’ is rough and rugged with rattling percussion hidden behind layers of grainy sci fi ambiance and the breathy exhalations of a male voice. Nebulous pads and synths spiral around each other forming a dense layer of dust and next track ‘March Of The Worms’ is even more militant. This one crawls deep below the surface where analogue machines carve out weird patterns, forming a truly knackered sounding house groove. Finally, ‘Claustrophobic Habits’ bangs a bit harder, it’s all splintered drums and coarse claps backed with a howling, gnarly groan and truly transports you to a sonic universe miles away from the norm.

R-Zone. Who is involved isn't exactly a secret, those who feel so inclined can piece the information together quite easily. It is however irrelevant to the concept of R-Zone, which would like to shift the focus away from namedropping and perception based on hype around individual artists and bring it back where it belongs; in the lap of the music.

The sounds exhibited across each track are fresh offerings that combine brightly coloured synths, swirling pads and non-standard beats into captivating and kaleidoscopic soundscapes that constantly evolve from start to finish. A cosmic, intergalactical energy pervades each release, transporting you to a world far away from here. The rest of the tell can be told by R-Zone themselves:

“Have you ever stood in a traffic jam in the middle of nowhere with complete strangers desperately looking for a party that may or may not exist? Have you ever wandered around a bombed out illegal warehouse rave at X in the morning on an E come-down? Have you ever stood in limbo between the click of a strobe or between the shards of a dense orange haze that emanates from a fog machine? Floating away on never ending waves of music and substance induced - we may as well call it - LOVE? Where for one brief moment it didn't matter who you are and what you do and how you look or how many scene-points you have? If so then you will remember the R-Zone as a shadowy place that never fully exists yet is always waiting. “
