These words spoken by Lonnie Liston Smith to describe the inspiration for the lyrics to his timeless classic Expansions are sadly as true today as when he spoke them all those years ago. It was this notion that prompted Japan’s UnitedSoul (DJ Uchikawa and Soul-T) to revisit this message, reinterpreting the song as a deep soulful house cut complete with live instrumentation for a new generation.

They also enlisted a stellar cast to provide the remixes.

Osunlade brings the funk out in his extended “Yoruba Soul Mix”, while Ian Friday was so inspired that he decided to make his own cover version with the “Libation Remake” featuring Byron J Moore on vocals.

Completing the package is Chi-Town’s very own Excursions crew (Cordell Johnson & Skorpeze) taking it to the club with their “Excursions Go Deep Remix”.

The Connection: Modern Explorations In Afro and Latin Music is the vision of Rich Medina and Bobbito Garcia. The two are considered amongst the world’s most progressive club DJs, having provided Hip Hop, Dance, and Rare Groove to dancers for 40+ years combined. 
 
In the last decade, they have each fostered intense followings for specific genres and sounds. In Big Rich’s case, it’s been Afro Beat/Funk/Jazz and World Soul. The multi-talented poet/producer/songwriter’s eight-year-old JUMP ‘N FUNK Fela Kuti Tribute Party is widely recognized as the very best of its kind, as he has at times carried that movement on his back and been largely responsible for the current revival of the original “Black President.” Similarly, Hip Hop radio legend and former Vibe Magazine columnist Kool Bob Love’s mission has been to expose rare Latin Jazz/Funk/Soul/Breaks at his award-winning VINYL IS FOREVER monthly at APT (NYC), as well as at the bi-coastal FANIA RECORDS TRIBUTE annual gigs.

Close friends since 1990, Rich and Bob started spinning together in ‘97, and have branded their musical journeys at their HAPPY FEET party to the great pleasure of crowds worldwide. Irish DJ & Producer Colm K has been playing at his renowned monthly “Sunday Times!” for seven years and running, but began his interaction with the international music world after his selection for the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome 2003. This resulted in producing studio projects for Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, (including remix duties with Mr Scruff) and Brian Deady, as well as releasing music on Brownswood and Bastard Jazz. He’s also been featured on Ransome Note, Stamp The Wax and a Boiler Room mix. 

Having appeared on R2 Records for Seven Davis Jr’s comp “Future Society” we are happy to announce Colm K has produced an exquisite E.P. for us, each of the three tracks showcasing his versatility.

“Time” is a down tempo soul burner, the beats tight, the production crisp and the vocals of Aisling Kelly riding beautifully.

“Time Again” picks things up with a mid-tempo house track to melt any dance floor. Floating melodies cut with Colm’s signature crisp beats creating a steady growing soulful beast.

Finally “Uncertainty” sees Colm revert to funk break territory, but this time flips it with soulful chords, evolving into a delicious deep groove and synth workout before gently bringing us back down to Earth.

For Tomahawk Bang, music is “Himdag” or the “way of life.” As a native of Arizona’s Onk Akimel O’odham tribe; the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, Tomahawk developed his relationship with music whilst participating in traditional ceremonies on his homeland. The deeply spiritual nature of his culture serves as one of the clearest influences and most pertinent characteristics of his music. Coflo Ferreira is a dancer, producer and Capoeirista born and raised in the East Bay Area of California. Founder of Catch The Ghost Records and proud member of the Soulshifters artistry collective and legendary dance crew, Circle of Fire.

Twolegs (Torben Hansen) is a producer, remixer and sound designer from Denmark. He started making music at the age of 15 on his Commodore 64 and for many years was part of the underground demo scene on both Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga and the early mid 90's PC tracker-scene. 

Perspectives EP, his first for R2 Records showcases Twolegs distinct fusion of deep house, jazz and funk in three different ways: The title track echoes the deep soulful early house sounds of Chicago almost wistfully longing for those days to return. Worth It takes us into the electronic side of soul, and Love you (Summer Love) is pure flute drenched good vibes.
