Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I would describe myself as someone that definitely lets music speak for itself. Whatever vibe you hear me play, is how I feel. djing for me is the best way i can execute who I am and how to connect with the listener. 

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. I’ve been a part of NYC scene for about 5 years now. 

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. This mix is some of my top favorite underground hiphop classics. A lot of dope women in this mix as well which is always important for me to include in everything I do. Making this mix had me revisit a lot of times in my life so definitely was an emotional one to make. Hiphop will always be my one true love and something i’ll always find my way back to. Hopefully you enjoy this just as much as i did making it. Peace and love.

This week's Exchange was recorded in November 2021 as part of our Full Circle series, which celebrates women in electronic music. DJ, producer and community organiser JADALAREIGN sat down with two of Resident Advisor's staff writers, Kiana Mickles and Nyshka Chandran, at our New York office. 

JADALAREIGN was raised about an hour north of New York City, in a musical household soundtracked by funk, soul, hip-hop and R&B. Growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood impacted how she operates today—her work prioritises cultivating community, as community wasn't always something she felt she had. 

After playing instruments, studying fashion and ending up in a corporate job, JADALAREIGN became increasingly engaged in music through her side hustle as the music director for an entertainment blog. In 2015, she took her first DJ lesson and felt instantly drawn to the craft. Gradually, she grew more and more immersed in the New York scene. 

Today, JADALAREIGN is a booker for leading New York club Nowadays, using her role heading up the Friday night programming to create more space and opportunity for people of colour in dance music. She also runs a workshop series called SKILLSHARE, which supports other women of colour, as well as queer folks, non-binary people and trans people, wanting to learn about the ins and outs of the music industry. In 2020, she launched In Sessions with Sam Law and FIVEBOI, a digital production camp that, when it first launched, reached around 300 people daily from 30 different countries. 

In this Exchange, JADALAREIGN discusses her work and community projects, how New York's dance music culture has changed in recent years and the importance of the scene's players engaging in honest reflection to increase diversity. She also touches on the value of mentorship for marginalised creatives and what can be done to prevent artists of colour feeling tokenised.

This week we continue our 4 week series of Potcasts highlighting Atlanta's Deep South crew by dropping a mix by Ash Lauryn. A name that has been bubblin' up this year with her recent plays in San Francisco and Movement Detroit and mixes for Rinse and Discwoman we are catching her feeling. Flexing a penchant for both deep and harder sounds, the title of this mix gives listeners a musical warning but also gives you a peak into what makes Ash such a compelling figure on the scene. Self-proclaimed "Underground and Black," Ash leads her musical charge with a candid love for the historical roots of dance-music and the power of reclamation in modern day America. From track selection, to honing technique, to gig choices, Ash wants you to feel her as much as dance in-front of her. She wants you to consider your placement, the cause and effect and to tickle your brain as you drop into her beats. It is a common thread she shares with the Deep South collective, a crew forging dance-caves for queers in a city not known for publicly holding space in that respect. Surely every great party gives you a release, but not all releases must be an escape. In the case of Ash, that release can be one focused on freedom of expression and sharing understanding - but also an nod to what the music represents and the hustle to get it onto the wax. Ash might have a decade of being in the scene under her belt, but her eager enjoyment for what she does and the possibilities for musical renewal feels so youthful and about 15 minutes into this mix you will be pumping the air with her as if it was your first night out too.
