“This mix really got me moving when I was recording,” says Moktar, the fast-rising DJ and producer behind Crack Mix 477. 

It’s not hard to see why. Coming in at just over 45 minutes, the mix quivers with life as captivating rhythms, “Arabic flavours, and percussive swings with some melodic basslines” come together with nimble mixing across a club-primed set shared just in time for the weekend.

Crack Mix 477: Moktar

Another artist on the 3024 mentoring programme, Berlin-based DJ and producer Guava seeks inspiration from his friends and community for a stunning mix which opens blissfully with a selection of unreleased tracks from Pace Yourself and Guava himself. The session then builds into the a kaleidoscope of breaks-filled colour featuring tracks from Talik, ADG, Stenny, and 2 Bad Mice to name a few. 

Speaking about the mix, Guava says, “doing mixes is really interesting from my side as I come at it from a production perspective. Whenever I do mixes I tend to just use music that is written by my friends and my wider scene. As a result, I think musically, it’s such a advantage as you end up with a cohesive structure that exists and all cuts from the same cloth - yet still have enough variation in it for it to be interesting. It’s not me making an accolade about my own music, it’s just the way I select tracks, having stuff from my friends, my peers and my own music as well. My music is inspired by my peers. Sometimes when I’m stuck with when making my own music, a friend said to me why don’t you make a mix and you’ll have a better understanding of the music that moves you - no matter what genre or tempo. So this is kind of an insight into the process behind some of my productions.” 

In a few short years under the Guava alias, real name Bradley Hutchings, has released much-loved EPs on the likes of Holding Hands, Touch From A Distance, Breaka Recordings, Control Freak and Tread Records. This year, he made his debut on 3024, contributing to the second compilation series, ‘Everything Merged’, which features tracks all from producers on the mentoring programme. Aside from his work under Guava, Bradley is a session guitarist and composer, previously working as a touring musician with bands such as Malena Zavala and LION. This has led to performances at BBC Maida Vale, Hammersmith Apollo, The Roundhouse and Abbey Road Studio 2.

Swiss pro­duc­er and DJ NVST (@ghettonast) likes to shock her crowd. She thrives on clashing sounds, scenes, genres and textures into uncomfortable new worlds, all of which is a result of coming up from the illegal party scene in her homeland. She works hard to develop and preserve that native scene in many different ways: she is part of the Female:Pressure fam­i­ly, co-runs the French label Big Sci­ence and hold­s down res­i­den­cies on LYL­Ra­dio and Rinse FM. 
 
This week's mix was recorded in Le Bourg, a club in Lausanne that NVST tells us has recently been taken over and is working hard to bring something fresh to the scene. The mix is filled with unreleased tracks from NVST's favourite artists and forthcoming tunes from labels like Big Science, Kindergatern and moshtrq next to some of her all-time favourites. It opens with a collage that includes Tamika D. Mallory's 'State of Emergency' speech of which she says "I remember the first time I heard it so accurately; I knew I should include it symbolically as well because it resonates so much with me."

London-based musician I. JORDAN—a disciple of fast-paced, high-energy dance music—has undergone a creative renaissance since 2021. Last February, they were nominated for Best Producer at the annual NME awards, and they celebrated a jam-packed touring and release schedule, which included signing to Ninja Tune. Now, they're on the heels of a residency they oversaw designed specifically for trans and nonbinary artists, produced by Brighter Sound and Generator. They're also planning a tour with close friend and collaborator SHERELLE. "There is something really beautiful about trans only spaces, something that I can't put words into," they tell host Vanessa Maria in this week's RA Exchange. "It's just a feeling. Trans people get it. Trans people know it. It just does stuff to you, and I can't really explain."

Their conversation touches on the power of queer community, the spectre of imposter syndrome and the growing importance of nurturing creative outlets for marginalised musicians. Critically, I. JORDAN and Maria also take stock of what the underground scene can do to support trans and nonbinary artists by reconfiguring some of the industry's deeply rooted discriminatory practices from the ground up.
