Description:
Following the experimental streak thrown down by our two released albums, Modal Analysis proudly presents Het Zweet – Archives Volume 1: 1982-1988, a compilation of the Dutch outsider legend painstakingly picked from over 100 hours of unheard tape. An early electronic pioneer who employed homemade percussion, wind, and string instruments alongside a few more modern pieces, mainly a Korg MS-10 and the tape recorder he used as his primary composition tool, Marien Van Oers occupies a lonely branch on the tree of this music’s early efforts. In sixteen pieces ranging from only seconds to well over ten minutes, we explore the full breadth of his accomplishments, from familiar pounding industrial grooves with vocals to ambient fragments and into extended, entrancing efforts bridging this gap but finding few parallels.

Most closely akin to Muslimgauze, Test Dept. or Fad Gadget, all musicians who shared his outsider practice while remaining thoroughly immersed in contemporary sounds that paralleled their own work, Het Zweet is striking for the diversity of his sound and for its meticulous composition, formed of carefully arranged layers of sonic detritus culled from his collection of homemade instrumentation and electronic distortions. Also included is a live document from February 1984 in his hometown of Breda, Holland, whose sparse crowd noise and raw phonics tell all too well the difficulties of his music then as now. Finally rising to greater exposure since his death in 2013 alongside similarly minded, now-departed contemporaries like Byrn Jones, whose works also prominently appeared on the Staalplaat label/zine, 2022 marked the high point thus far of Van Oers’ reevaluation. Modal Analysis passionately continues this mission with our first volume of archives dedicated to the memory of this bold innovator gone before his time.

Over the last month, the music and events industry has entered unchartered territory due to the Covid-19 lockdown, and artists and online media have found themselves in a financially vulnerable position with much more time on their hands.

To help some of those artists, and provide Ransom Note with much-needed financial support, three weeks ago we reached out to some friends of the website with the challenge to make a track in collaboration with another producer, musician or vocalist, remotely, in 10 days. The result is ‘Pen Pals’: a compilation featuring 15 collaborations from 32 artists.

Due to the current situation we’ve increased royalties for all artists involved and, whilst the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions apply, accounting will be processed fortnightly. Profits from the compilation will also provide financial support for Ransom Note who have been heavily impacted by the halt of the events industry.

Ana Belephoneq is an electro-pop project, a collaboration of veteran synth-pop musician Ishai Adar and Maurice Sarfati, R.I.P., who was a Jerusalem legend, an arab-jew of tunisian descent, a poet, a singer, a rock historian and a retired income tax investigator all rolled into one.
Ishai Adar releases electronic music albums since the 1990's. He met Maurice Sarfati during the previous decade, when he worked in one of Jerusalem's mythological record stores :  "The Record House". Maurice was a colourful character already then : a compulsive consumer of alternative culture by night, an income tax investigator by day, a storyteller and a song writer who was born in Tunis in 1947 and immigrated to Israel in the age of 6. In the "Record House" Ishai quickly became his main supplier of new music, and later they became close friends.
In 2014, Ishai and Maurice started collaborating on an album, based on lyrics written and spoken by Maurice, and Adar's electronic production.
In 2018 Maurice Sarfati passed away, at the age of 71. The Ana Belephoneq 7-inch record on https://soundcloud.com/confused-machines includes the only two songs the two managed to record before his death.
