Jimi Hendrix, as part of the  ‘Jimi Hendrix Experience’  released All Along the Watchtower as a single in September 1968, a month prior to the release of their album Electric Ladyland, which featured the track.  The song was not written by Hendrix, but by Bob Dylan, who originally recorded it in 1967 as part of his album John Wesley Harding.  

Hendrix was a rock guitar legend in the late 1960s and early 70s.  His mainstream career lasted only four years, from 1966 to 1970 when he tragically died from a drug overdose.  Hendrix struggled with his mental health throughout his short life – he  died at the age of 27.  He had mood swings and once wrote a song called Manic Depression, so it is likely he suffered with Bi-polar disorder.  He came from an impoverished family and had a difficult childhood but none of that stopped him becoming  one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century and one of the most influential guitarists in history. By the time Jimi Hendrix played at Madison Square Gardens in 1969 he was the highest paid rock musician in the world, earning $14,000 a  minute for his performance. 

Despite All Along the Watchtower being a Dylan song, it is forever associated with Jimi Hendrix.  Even Dylan himself altered his own rendition of the song after hearing Hendrix’s version, which he said ‘overwhelmed’ him, saying that he now sees the song as a tribute to Hendrix whenever he performs it.  

Hendrix has a large backstory. Domestic violence appears to have played a big part in his early life and his struggles with his mental health are well documented.  He moved to England in 1966 where his career took off after forming the Jimi Hendrix Experience and had 3 UK top ten hits within months. In 1969 he headlined Woodstock and his rendition of Star-Spangled Banner is still considered the greatest performance of all time by Guitar World.  

The single of All Along The Watchtower performed by Jimi Hendrix reached number 5 in the UK charts becoming the first UK stereo-only single to do so.  It was also Hendrix’s highest ranking American single.

Whilst many believe that his last performance was at the Isle of Wight festival in late August 1970, his actual last live performance was in Germany on 6th September 1970, where one of the songs he played was All Along the Watchtower.  Hendrix was found dead on 18th September at his home in London and details about his last day and death remain disputed. 
 
A ‘blue plaque’ identifies his former residence at Brook Street, London and was the first issued by English Heritage to commemorate a pop star.  He also received a Grammy award for his recording of Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower in 2000.

Described by the he Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as "the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music" his was a talent lost too soon to mental health and drug issues.  Please support my campaign to break the stigma of mental health.
