[disquiet0705] salt grows heavy

This week's Disquiet Junto prompt asked us to use the first line of a favorite book as the inspiration for a piece of music. I selected David Byrne's "How Music Works", with the opening sentence "I had an extremely slow-dawning insight about creation."

I'm traveling this week, so away from my outboard gear, but I did bring along a mini keyboard and headphones so that I could still participate this week! Features several layers of software synths (mainly Alchemy) and a field recording made from the 3rd floor balcony of the flat we're renting while we're here.

I tried to keep this sparse (for me at least), following the idea of the "slow-dawning insight", while still capturing the chaos of the creative act. It's probably still unsettling, but I just can't help that.

A Slow Dawning Insight About Creation (disquiet0705)

One of my favourite books is the novel "The Light on the Mountains" (Birtan á fjöllunum) by Jón Kalman Stefánsson. It starts with the sentence 'Sometimes it is as if everything in the past becomes poetry', which is my translation of the German phrase 'Manchmal ist es, als würde alles Vergangene zu Poesie', as written in my German edition of this Icelandic novel.
I tried to set this sentence to music as part of this week's Disquiet Junto project.

Die Basis steht, aber muss noch gefeilt werden; besonders der Übergang zwischen der 6/8 Bridge und dem folgenden Chorus.
Im Moment noch zu voll, muss ausgedünnt werden. Die verzerrte Ukulele in den Instrumentalparts ist es wahrscheinlich noch nicht.
Bin gespannt auf Ideen!

The basic structure is in place, but still needs work, especially the link between the 6/8 Bridge and the Chorus is not smooth enough.
Instruments/Parts: A little too much of everything. The fuzz ukulele might not be the final answer in the instrumental parts.
Open to suggestions!

This week's #disquietjunto prompt was to make a track using your bathroom (or someone else's).  I'm teaching at a music camp and happened to have just taught my students a unit on reverb. I wrote a short accordion melody and recorded it in my bathroom, which gave me flashbacks to late 90's home-recording techniques ("record your vocals in the bathroom, it has natural reverb and will sound professional.")

Then - this is the fun part - I bounced the whole track, sped it up 4x so the pitch was 4x higher. I reamped and rerecorded it in an (unoccupied) dorm bathroom, then slowed down the new recording by 4, and voila - this dreamy, liminal soundscape emerged.

You can still hear the original accordion melody, very slightly, and the original transition effects (created by recording the creaky bathroom door).
