Greenery compels me to eat lunch under the aspen trees
shimmering leaves, together we breathe, united by air, reciprocity 

Pink magenta clouds billow bright
A bittersweet sunset, when smoke hits the light

the uncontrolled flames burn near the next town 
suitcases of our treasures come with me down 

to the valley where cicadas sing 
surrounded by new friends, Its you baby i'm missing 

and I wish I could call you but you're not yet back
I hypothesized what you’d want me to pack

notebooks of poems and sketches, family heirlooms, 
burn the brush before the sentimental 

Native peoples of these lands know what they're doing 
stewarding with cultural burning

But we were mislead, hey what’s new really 
Deception spun from a bear named smokey

Prayers in the creek, promising to try 
and protect what we have left

inhale a breath, then dive under

overcooked radishes and mushrooms 
tumbled into the clear and red tupperware
no more appetite not quite a fight but a conversation, 
tight throat heavy shoulders
the snapping of the leftovers lid, like turtles

i want to jump ship from mine into yours
so we could sail together
settle down with a doggie in the yard
but lately I was scared.
tugged at the kitchen towel’s minty threads

reflected back what was said
invited defensiveness in for a cup of tea
