This song was created by Songwriter Tahu Dubs to tell the story of STREAT graduate, Bambi. (Read: streat.com.au/stories/i-am-bambi)

The song is inspired by Bambi’s story and was created through a collaborative storytelling initiative by the Melburnian Social Enterprise, STREAT, to give young homeless and disengaged people a possibility to explore their creativity and have their stories told, through collaboration with a range of fantastic songwriters from the city of Melbourne.

Pushed around/beat down/ ears filled with screams/ too much pain as a teen to even contemplate dreams/ no support coming from home/ had to leave the violence/ go at it alone/ before she knows it she's out living on the street/ no job no way to make ends meet/ no success here life's looking like defeat/ been crushed inside/ feels incomplete/ getting high to let the time fly by/ holding back emotions you can see it in her eye/ all she wants to do/ is let it out and cry/ but she takes another hit/ swallows pride as she sighs/ lays back/ fades to black/ life's on a one way track/ so numb she can no longer react/ to the demons/ calling from the past/ grabs the alcohol/ reaches for a glass/ pours the liquor from the cask for a quick laugh

Drugs and thugs/ acting real but they've got no love/ exploitation that's their game/ find new users that's their aim/ and they have no shame/ but she's too aware/ she knows there's something else for her out there/ been to the bottom so she's dealt with real fears/ real cares/ shed real tears for many years and now she wants a career/surround herself with good people/ happy people/ not the ones doing things that make her sick just to get a hit/she's seen the fate of the housing estate/ throw the problems in the gate if they can't relate/ close to defeat/ marched herself to streat/ collaborate/ shared her story with streatbeat/ met mentors there/ solid like concrete/ held her head up high and put her back on her feet

Not just her story/ it's the story of so many others/ coming from a broken home/ no other option but to roam/ the lonely dark streets/ looking trying to fit in/ in a city of sin/ people selling people for a crooked grin/ fakes act like they want to be nice/ but they really want ice/ so you got to think twice/had to grow up quick/ adolescence she will never know/ and that thought right there brings pain to her soul

The rocks fell crashing towards the waves below. The coastline was vanishing, only to be swallowed by the murky depths of the black and stormy ocean. Many fishermen had lost their minds at sea, they had careered towards the rock, their ships smashing coarsely against the land. They had been enchanted by the song of the sirens who lived beneath the waves. Their song would echo through the night and entice them back towards the bay. All that would follow was coastal decay, time and time again.
