I have spent my whole life in Northern and Western cities: Brooklyn, Oakland, Hartford. But my mother and her family have spent their whole lives in the Southern Appalachian Piedmont Plateau. On July 15, 2014 I moved to Virginia near where my maternal family has farmed for more than 200 years, but where I have never lived before.

return of the lost lamb is a site-specific structure for myself to improvise on horn with a recording from the porch of my family homestead in Virginia mixed with the live, amplified sound of the streets of the Lower East Side outside ABC No Rio during my performance there on July 13, 2014.

Pontifex is a setting of Pope Francis’s Tweets  from 2013, 2014, and 2015. The sonic language is influenced by the harmonies of early sacred Catholic music and the rhythms of Milonga,  an Argentinian traditional music which is a favorite of His Holiness.

The Hooded Warbler (Setophaga Citrina) is a small migratory songbird that makes its home along the Eastern coast of North America. Citrina Migration plays with ideas of musical space and place as they relate to the sound and story of the horn/ harp duo Apple Orange Pair.

Moss (2010)

Burning for natural harmonic horn, natural harmonic percussion, and electronics, is a work that reimagines the original musical incarnation of the French horn in a contemporary soundscape.  It is an exploration of the natural intonation of the harmonic series as played on a crook horn—the pure sound of the instrument unencumbered by temperament.  The modern, chromatic French horn allows players to use valves to switch between harmonic series in an instant in order to conform to diatonic harmony.  Burning reverts back to the original horn and exploits the natural phenomena of the harmonic series as played on the horn unchanged with valves.  The horn embouchure can only produce a limited number of notes, so a natural harmonic percussion instrument, designed and built by the composer specifically to match the harmonic series of the horn, extends the range of the horn and highlights the tuning differences. Also, an electronic instrument, created with SuperCollider by the composer, is employed to further enhance and accompany the acoustic phenomena and the interactions between the two instruments.  Rachel Devorah Trapp plays natural harmonic horn and Robert Lopez plays natural harmonic percussion.
