Todd Mason's “Echoes of the Heart” is performed by Rachel Mellis (flute, alto flute, & bass flute) in an arrangement for 3 flutes from the original for three cellos.

"Echoes of the Heart" by Todd Mason

Composer, Todd Mason, describes “Where Our Innocence Once Stood,” as a poetic journey from the 19th Century belief that the cosmos was static and unchanging to our present understanding of a dynamic, unimaginably vast, and always evolving universe.

The premiere on July 7 was held at the Mount Wilson Observatory next to the great 100-inch telescope used in the 1920s to discover our larger universe.

Todd Mason is an LA based composer who studied at the Juilliard School with Elliott Carter, Roger Sessions and David Diamond.

Where our innocence once stood
by Todd Mason

When the sun last glinted,
our earthly bonds were no more
where our innocence once stood.

From this mountaintop, this peaceful place
Impossible oddities of endless power
Strangers of light and darkness they
fill our eyes with yearning awe
Could it be, such mystery

Each star new worlds,
like grains of sand
Is it endless, are we alone?

This eternal 
searching question
are we all there is?
How can this be?

Quadrillions of stars everywhere
with great explosions,
of cosmic violence
We are far from home

Hieroglyphs shining from afar
hiding their timeless secrets 

Boiling seas and molten rocks
Icy realms of beauty
Could other souls be living there?
or ruins of the ancient gods

From this mountaintop,
this peaceful place
The outposts of the universe beckon from afar 
our minds filled with wonder 

Now we look into the stars
for we must know

"Where Our Innocence Once Stood" by Todd Mason

Flutist Rachel Mellis enjoys a multi-faceted career as an orchestral, chamber, solo, and recording artist. She performs regularly throughout the U.S. and has toured internationally in Europe and Asia. Rachel has collaborated with esteemed artists such as John Williams, Danny Elfman, Michael Bublé, Christina Aguilera, Gustavo Dudamel, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Zubin Mehta, Michael Tilson Thomas, James Conlon, Rachel Platten, and Seth Macfarlane. 

Rachel is 2nd flutist with the Redlands Symphony and has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pasadena Symphony, Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, Desert Symphony, San Bernardino Symphony, and Riverside Philharmonic. She is passionate about contemporary music, both commissioning new works as a soloist, and performing with ensembles and festivals such as Hear Now, Flute New Music Consortium, and Bridge to Everywhere. 

As an active recording artist, Rachel has played on many soundtracks and albums, including on the Varèse Sarabande label. Projects include ads for New Balance Shoes and Sprinkles Cupcakes, TV shows Star Trek: Picard, Siberia, and Complete Works, and the Disney+ movie Timmy Failure. She is a featured soloist on video games Ori and the Blind Forest and Minecraft Chinese Mythology, and has appeared onscreen as a flutist on NBC’s The Voice and FOX Network’s Glee.   

In addition to western flutes, Rachel often performs and records on flutes from around the world, such as the bansuri, shakuhachi, pan pipes, dizi, Irish flute, recorder, penny whistle, queña, xiao, and ocarina. 

Rachel is on faculty at Occidental College where she maintains an active flute studio. Her own education includes Bachelor and Master Degrees in Flute Performance from the University of Southern California, where she studied under Jim Walker and Gary Woodward.
