Interviews from BBC Wiltshire Radio's feature on 'What I Bring', a commission from Swindon Festival of Literature, bringing together local professional dancers, young dancers, Swindon’s newest residents, and the Central Library in a unique performance.

Personal memories, folk legends, and movement woven together made a tapestry of tales that stretched from the town out across the World, and from the stage to the audience's imagination.
'What I Bring' was enabled by Matt Holland, and Leon Flower, and envisioned by Rachel Rose Reid, who collaborated with staff and visitors at The Harbour Project to assemble the stories, whilst
choreographer Helen Ganberg has been working with Swerve Dance Theatre Company and a group of local young people to find exciting new ways to share them. 

"On a cold February morning, Matt and Leon asked me if I would work with Helen and Swerve Dance to make a show for Swindon Festival of Literature at Swindon Central Library.  “What story would you like to tell?” they asked me. I had heard about the Harbour Project: what a great opportunity to have a festival of words feature stories from people who are often spoken about, but rarely given a chance to publicly speak for themselves. Not all of us wish to stand on stage and perform, so we have found ways to put these narratives at the centre without the pressure!  We are proud of what has been achieved in limited rehearsal period, and are very excited to share it with you.  I hope you find a little of yourself in someone else’s story."

Day and Night is a collective of singers and musicians curated by Anna-Helena McLean working with traditional and original folk songs from around the world. Every gig is unique as all the songs are learned, arranged and performed live in one day and one night.

Nachman Gates describes a role in the Jewish Eastern Europe, that was continued when communities moved to the East End of London. Without many clocks to wake them, someone was required to walk through the streets, rapping on windows to awaken people for morning prayers.  Rachel and the D&N collective created this new arrangement in about two hours!

RRR: Discussing 'I'm Hans Christian Andersen' on The Verb, BBC Radio 3

WILLESDEN GREEN WASSAIL
A respectfully irreverent adaptation of an ancient English festival.  The Wassail (still practiced in rural areas of England) is celebrated in the hope that apple trees will grow healthily in the coming year.  In urban areas, the ‘apple trees’ are local shops. Over a hundred participants walk down the High Street, hear from local shopkeepers, then loudly ‘wassail’ them with a new version of the traditional song ("Oh Abdul's Halal Butcher's We Wassail thee..!”).
Performers pronounce from soapboxes, and, when we reach our apple trees (planted in 2010), the whole crowd recreates the original Wassail rituals.
I'm happy to create similar events, or to pass on knowledge about how to create accessible, vibrant & relevant communal rituals in other urban settings.
