a good friend of mine painted a series of images based on descartes' "meditations on first philosophy."

i took painting number 6, sliced it into five strips, fed the images into photosounder, the converted the resulting .wav files to MIDI (quantized to 16ths). i used the MIDI clips separately to trigger various samples: kick; snare; low tom; floor tom; hi-hat. i added a steady hi-hat pedal to help navigate the slightly offbeat rhythms.

finally, i layered in a live guitar piece (played through VCV rack, which i first encountered through disquiet junto, many moons ago...)

some possible questions: how can we think about the relationship between something rhythmic (the "beat") and something a-rhythmic (the "ambient" guitar)?
do they feel like two utterly separate streams, or do they somehow inform each other?
also, my track is only one minute long - can something so short be called 'ambient'?
more generally, can such a brief composition claim to establish a mood or atmosphere?

(wittgensteinian thought: i can claim to have felt sad for one minute, but not to have been depressed for one minute. certain moods or states require longer stretches of time to operate.)

Craig Lincoln is a poet who enjoys the challenge of writing in many forms of poetry. He is the author of two poetry collections: A Mind’s Eye View Come Talk With Me, and Dance Macabre.

His poems have been featured in writing magazines such as The Curious Record, Scope Magazine, Readers Carnival, and on various poetry sites he is a member of. He has also been featured in poetry anthology collections such as Change of Scenery, They Shall Not Grow Old, Northern Lights and Brio.

Global warming and rising sea levels; the horrific revelation of the First Nations children buried beneath schools in Canada; statues of slave traders, such as Edward Colston being removed by anti-racism campaigners (bring it on!). 

But I wanted to do more than just observe… bringing all these together I wanted to make the link that our current state of human-made climate catastrophe is also an inevitable by-product of western capitalism that has had its foundations in colonialism, and religious / political imperialism. The impacts of history are not limited to the pages of the past, consequences of actions continue to unfurl in our present. 

Having grown up in Western Australia, I find that throughout my adult life I have been unlearning so many of the global narratives that I was taught as a child. At primary school we were taught history through the lens of colonialism. We celebrated the 1988 ‘Bicentenary’, 200 years since Captain Cook had discovered Australia. Not once were we asked to consider this heritage from another perspective, that through the eyes and experiences of First Nations peoples this event marked 200 years of white invasion and occupation. 

And then of course there are the links with The Church establishment. The Missions. Institutions that historically enabled the forcible taking of children from their homes and families. Complicit in colonial violence, enabling racism and white supremacy, covering up acts of abuse… 

In my adult years I’ve come to better understand colonialism as an act of global violence resulting in (and not limited to) stolen land, stolen culture, stolen children, in the name of progress and profit. 

We need a new framework. But what will it take to dismantle the existing ones?

Rachel Taylor-Beales is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose music intersects at the crossroad of folk, roots, blues and jazz. Her latest album Out Of This Frame was recorded and co-produced in collaboration with fellow artist and husband Bill Taylor-Beales in their South Wales based studio. Joined by Lucy Rivers on violin and additional vocals, Stacey Blythe on accordion, and guest appearances from Rachel and Bill’s daughter Polly, who adds spoken word elements on two tracks, while Rachel and Bill provide the rest of the musical accompaniments. From lyre-harp to kalimba, multiple guitars, to steel tongue drum, pianos, organs, banjos, bass, harmonicas, percussion and even a hint of soprano saxophone, Out Of This Frame weaves a dynamic tapestry of sound and stories. 

Describing her latest album Rachel says: ‘It’s mythical, political, personal… it’s a shout, it’s a whisper, it’s a wail… and at its core, it’s an album about re-framing  narratives.

Alongside her musical career, Rachel also dabbles in writing, theatre-making and painting and her latest gig-theatre show, Stone's Throw, Lament of the Selkie, was nominated by Wales Arts Review as a 'best of show' for 2020. In recent months Rachel has focussed on creating a series of paintings to accompany songs from Out Of This Frame. These can be seen in a hardcover and digital lyric/notes companion book to the album. Available through Bandcamp and Rachel's website and will be available to purchase alongside her new album from the 24/11/22. Out Of This Frame Is Rachel's fifth studio album 

Rachel spent the first 22 years of her life living between England and Australia, (with 6 relocations between countries, 23 different houses and 7 different schools) during that time - but has spent most of her subsequent years living in Wales. In 2012 her music career suffered a hiatus when she sustained severe injuries after falling from a high stage onto marble flooring while on tour in Italy (and also six months pregnant at that time). Several years and much physio treatment later Rachel was delighted to be able to return to playing music. She currently lives in Carmarthenshire with her husband, her daughter, a dog, a cat, 8 fish, 3 shrimp and 2 water snails.
