rachel torro- fruition - December 2013

Finally got my recording back from LIB and I'm immediately transported back to the rollercoaster of emotions I experienced that weekend. 

Between the heat, dust and being around tens of thousands of people after going through a pandemic, it's safe to say I was a little rusty at festivaling. On top of it, my legs felt like floppy noodles from how anxious I was to play the prime set time Friday night at the Junkyard. This is something I experience often before gigs, the sweats, self deprecating internal thoughts, imposter syndrome. I questioned if I belonged here or if I earned it. Then I mixed in and immediately felt at home. I thought to myself "Bitch you know what you're doing" and went on to play one of those "highlights of my career" sets for me personally. 

The rest of the night and weekend was a breeze, and the magic of LIB was amplified. I was able to see the thousands of smiling faces in front of me, the above and beyond details The Do Lab had added and updated, and realized this was so many people's first festival back and they could not be happier about it. I could not be happier about it. 

I hope that you enjoy it and that you're happy too.

I met the Groovewell boys 10 years ago through, you guessed it, the club. We became fast friends, myself just starting out as a young dj coming up through a sober 6am party called Morning Gloryville. Jake, Chris, Victor and Angel were loyal attendees as we discovered both ourselves and San Francisco, figuring out where we belonged so to speak. Soon enough we started playing parties together and lifting each other up wherever we could. I always exclaimed my proud mamma status as they gained popularity and their sound evolved. 

Skip forward to June 17th where I was featured in their limited block at their own party baby, Kamp Around and Find Out, where I found myself only wanting to make THEM proud and not the other way around.

Love you boys, and love you Never Sleep Again. I certainly kamped around and found out but hope I made you proud.

For October, here's a mix that evokes transformation.  Flux, the action or process of flowing, is my favorite part of the fall.  In the summertime, we're bombarded with music festivals, new people, day parties, nice weather, traveling, etc.  When Autumn comes around, you begin to interpret and classify those experiences and what to take away from them to prepare yourself for a winter of creativity and homelife.  What's important to you and who is serving as a positive influence in your life?  Start to block out other's influences, trends, and styles.  Focus on your raw, uninhibited art, and get to work :)

Northern Nights Music Festival is an intimate gathering about 4 hours north of San Francisco situated in the beautiful Humboldt Redwoods. When asked to not only play their festival, but to make an exclusive mix, I had no hesitation.

I really like how this one turned out. It has a lot of melody and journey to it, 2 of my favorite things in mixes. I tried to think a lot about the feeling of being in the redwoods and the reminder of how small and connected to the Earth I am. This mix would certainly do well on a roadtrip up the 101. I really hope you like it.

It's been a while :)

This winter I've been focusing a lot harder on my live sets rather than putting together these mixes. Nothing I've recorded has overwhelmed me with excitement and It's been a nice lesson in patience. If you're not feeling the inspiration to do something, wait until it comes back around. 9 Times out of 10 it happens way smoother than trying to force it.

It's a particularly chunky/dancy number so I hope it gets you moving through your day and night nicely.
