On May 24th, experimental musician Rupert Clervaux releases his debut solo album ‘After Masterpieces’ on Whities. 
The record features guest performances from saxophonist and trumpet player Eben Bull, singer Sian Ahern, and renowned experimental artist Anna Homler (aka Breadwoman) whose inimitable voice ushers us into the record’s opening prelude, and out of its redemptive final piece. 

The design by Alex McCullough and Kia Tasbihgou illustrates a 1:1 scale etched steel plate; the industrially machined casing through which an abstract landscape by the late Brian McMinn is visible. The printed sleeve is a reproduction of this steel ‘breach artefact’, bound with custom produced elastic band denoting the tracklist, strapping in place an accompanying poetry chapbook to it’s outer. 

‘After Masterpieces’ sets six recitals of Rupert’s poetry in unique, unpredictable and expansive musical scenery. The enigmatic and densely compacted texts, reworked and gently honed throughout the album’s slow creation, find an aerial perspective from which a lifetime of reading, listening and thinking is carefully re-mapped. The broad thematic scope takes in aesthetics, ancient mythologies, the origins of language and music, epistemology and ecology––to name just a few––all of which remain tightly intertwined, resistant to abstraction, and imbued with a sense of inquisitive ambiguity which treats all certainty with suspicion: the listener is invited to find their own threads, draw their own conclusions and think their own thoughts––as Anna Homler once aptly said of her own work, “…it’s not didactic, it’s poetic.” 

Initially deriving its impetus from the mood and rhythm of the words, the album’s music utilises a wide-array of performance and production techniques. Clervaux draws on his full range of musical interests, creating long-form pieces that at turns support the recitals and then lead the way for the instrumental swathes within and between them. The sounds of ‘After Masterpieces’ revolve through the melodic ambience of ‘Her Fingers of Pink Light’; the dark electronics and multi-layered samples of ‘In Shadowlands of Like and Likeness’; the tentative interplay of piano and voice on ‘Damper and Drum’; and the riff-like patterned percussion and free improvisation of ‘Make Nature Speak.’ As the LP draws to a close, Homler and Bull join Rupert on ‘L’amore che Muove il Sole’—a sprawling anti-hymn, echoing the structure of ‘The Divine Comedy’, which discovers, in place of Dante’s heavenly paradise, a fragile optimism for positive change in the wreckage of failed grand narratives.

[BD010] Microtub – Chronic Shift LP

Microtub is the world’s first and only microtonal tuba trio, exploring Just Intonation and the rich harmonic potential of the tuba. This album features material from Robin Hayward’s pieces „Sonic Drift“ and „Star System“, recorded in the stunning acoustics of the large water reservoir in Berlin-Pankow, reworked and mixed with analogue synthesizers by Peder Simonsen.

Recorded in „Kunstkopf“ stereophony, this unlikely combination of tubas and simple synth pitches provides a meditative and immersive experience, and an auditory glimpse into a truly unique acoustic space. While „Chronic Shift“ zones in on the neutral microtonal harmonies that underly „Sonic Drift“, the synths on „System Reboot“ mainly shadow the harmonics in the giant room, both as sustained pitches and as spaced out droplets lending movement to the track.

I've been thinking a lot about stretching time. 
smearing textures to obscure but also to take a closer look. 
I think what we all want is more easily found either 
birds eye or magnified to the most extreme. 

I've been thinking about 
stretching, 
stretching 
time. 

A moment lost, then found, 
then explored to infinity, then perhaps forgotten. 

So caught up in the immediate – we lose sight of the infinite, 
the looping — 

I've been thinking a lot about now 
but maybe in a way you haven't thought of, 
(maybe you had or have before) 
but I've been thinking a lot about examination, 
magnification as retribution and freedom. 

I've been thinking about the end — 
is it so different than now or 
does it merely act as bookend 
and thus drama is procured — 

I've been thinking about 
literally 
emotions smeared slowly 
across something that acts as canvas — 

I think we all look for canvases as friends and 
lovers as mirrors, 
to investigate — 
exploring time, 
exploring the infinite — 
I've been thinking a lot about stretching these times, 
one moment as symbology 
but realization that all moments are just as equal and 
profundity in the mundane, 

I've been thinking about magnification and 
the decision to shift the mundane to a profound status — 
to lose ones self again and again through magnification 
-/ what a rush — 
to actually care about now as apposed to 
conceptualizing the 
living fuck out of it, 
instead of beating your 
life fucking senseless with 
irony leaving it 
alone to die

I've been thinking about stretching moments to cherish 
what there is in front of me, 
I don't want to lose

smeared emotions — 

the first time I thought this way was 
when it started 
there were 
references to previous masters 
yes, 
I want to be like the pollock of sound 
I want to find inherent freedom 
in the lack of structure 
I want to find the most structure 
after tipping 
a tipping point 
to see what happens then

Shanghai's @LaughingEars makes her @Decisionsrecords debut this February with 'Blue Dusk' EP. 

Previously Laughing Ears has released music via Beijing’s Ran Music and Hangzhou’s FunctionLab, and NTS stans may recognise her name following radio appearances on the cult East London station.

Sonically, Laughing Ears orbits around a kind of explorative, cyberpunk-ish universe as she draws from ambient, bass, footwork and noise. Here on 'Blue Dusk', she's "extending her praxis of psycho-sonic inquiry" (says the label) in order to "deep-dive [into] a crepuscular environment teeming with insectile percussion and thrumming sub bass, illuminated by brilliant searchlight melodies".
