Dan Hicks was a member of the "original" psychedelic band, the Charlatans, for whom he played drums in the band's famed summer of 1965 session at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada. But with this band, things were different. As he says in introducing one of the tunes in this concert from 1968, "this is about as close to psychedelic as we get." Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks played music unlike any of their contemporaries in San Francisco, swing music that touched on a wide range of genres and styles. This performance predates the band's first album by a year or so, but perfectly captures their highly original and beautifully played music.
