Jonas Saalbach’s prolific career in electronic music has seen more than a few milestones. From youthful beginnings as a live-only performer over dozens of eps on premier labels to the release of three studio albums and the inception of his own imprint Radikon in 2018, the Berlin producer has pursued his musical vision with uncompromising fervour. ‘Headlights’, an 11-track album set for release on his own imprint, feels like the summit of a decade-long climb to the highest echelons of electronic dance music.

With ‘Headlights’, Jonas has created his most personal and mature work to date, free of the criteria of producing for an external label. His newest coup is a no-frills translation from mind to melody that showcases the inner workings of Jonas’ auditory universe in the most honest way possible. Nostalgic, longing, introspective and wildly emotional, ‘Headlights’ strips away all distractions; a pure love for dance music is all that remains.

Once a young producer who hypnotized stages around the globe with his energy and joie de vivre, Jonas today has crafted a platform that takes his art to the next level. After a decade in dance music, ‘Headlights’ is the pinnacle of a musical journey and perhaps the most powerful achievement in a storied career.

Fast-rising Italian DJ and producer Bar.ba teams up with Odagled and lands at Renaissance with Festival…

Collaborations are a wonderful thing when they go well and the creative spark ignites. In the case of Festival props are due to Pablo Bolivar’s Seven Villas because Bar.ba and Odagled connected thanks to a chance meeting through a compilation on the label. “We quickly realised there was mutual respect,” explains Bar.ba, “we have a similar appreciation of what we like, so the decision to take the next step and do something together came very easily.”

After laying down an initial sketch at his studio in Spain, Odageld sent the track over to Bar.ba in Bergamo to sprinkle it with his production magic. The result is a record with rare qualities - infectious without being obvious and wholly unique in its refusal to conform to a specific genre.

As ever with Renaissance, they were keen to expand the track into an EP, so it seemed appropriate to invite Sasha Carassi to handle remix duties, what with his credentials as a fellow Italian and past (and continuing) member of the label family. His mix further confirms why he’s one of the hottest properties in dance right now; few can boast releases on Bedrock and Knee Deep in Sound on their 2022 discography already. “Soon as I heard the original I knew I could do something with ‘Festival’”, he says, “I couldn’t wait to get to grips with it and take it up a gear.”

The EP rounds out with Bar.ba’s own breakbeat take on proceedings. Titled the ‘Electric Strange Mix’, it aptly confirms the tracks leftfield credentials. “Renaissance requested this alternate mix and I’m really pleased they did,” he admits, “after playing around for a while it came together well. I’m delighted with the way it turned out.”

We welcome Dutch duo Sounom & Sagou to Lowbit with their new EP "Soixanteneuf". The eponymous "Soixanteneuf" pushes its arrangement forward through a long buildup with lush pads, accented stabs, and oriental-inspired arpeggios.

"Vaded" the second original in the EP is the polar opposite to "Soixanteneuf", with its dark and rumbly bassline and impactful drums.

Hot on the heels of his recent EP on Lowbit, Nichols turns up the first remix in the release turning "Vaded" into a proper monster tune with his dark style of melodic and hypnotic techno.

Lowbit manager Eleven Sins puts his spin on "Vaded", transforming it into a peak time progressive bomb with its rapid-fire bassline, chunky drums, and squelchy leads.

Wrapping up the release is Lowbit owner Sonic Union, who tackles the sole remix of "Soixanteneuf", twisting the deep original into an energetic progressive track and rounding out the EP nicely.

Closing out the EP ‘Chase’ hits more of a 4/4 club vibe, demonstrating a deeper darker side of Betical’s productions, while always keeping melody and emotive chords at the forefront of things.

This feels like just the beginning of a very important journey, with Icon / Chase only just touching the surface of Betical’s undoubted talents.
