Aniruddha Das (aka Dhangsha) is an experimental electronic musician who explores the relationship between rhythm and noise. His approach focuses on minimalism, repetition and sound fragmentation. His sparse but incisive beats are punctuated by African clave patterns, while his alien synthetic motifs betray his love for the Detroit sound. The real-time manipulation of various distortions pushes each track towards entropy – a feeling of imminent collapse – and is the main performative aspect of his live improvisations.

‘Fragment 1’ is the first piece composed from recordings made in recent years. These recordings come from glasses and porcelain objects placed on plates and set in motion by synthesizers. As in a controlled earthquake, the objects tremble on the surface and begin to resonate. This sound is captured by 16 piezoelectric microphones and processed through effects. This working method is an adaptation of the sound installation Glas- und Porzellanabteilung, developed in 2021 for the Klang Moor Schopfe festival.
Fresco/Sommer are Jordi Fresco and Roger Sommer, who have been active as a musical duo since 2018.

Thin Frequency invites us to immerse ourselves in sound – a sustained moment within the fracture of the present – to perceive its nuances and become attentive and conscious listeners. The composition uses the sine wave as an essential element to reflect on the most basic and pure part of sound: a frequency. The omnipresence of sine waves creates a physical experience through heterogeneous pressure fields. As the listener moves through space, they will perceive these irregularities as subtle acoustic micro-variations.

Sick of their own face

This is a five-minute sound that captures insects and moving vehicles, recorded on the island.  The work highlights the intertwining of ‘passage’ and sound: without motorways, the communication of these insects would not be disturbed by cars; without Internet and radio, the insects in Chiasso would not hear the sound of distant insects. It also suggests a blurring of the distinction between sound and noise: whether it is a sound that is unwanted locally but heard here at the festival, or a sound that is currently incomprehensible - such as that of insects and cars - that could take on a different meaning as technology advances.

Charles Kwong is a composer from Hong Kong whose practice approaches music as collective experiential situations - within, but also beyond, listening and sounds. His creative output spans orchestral music, collaborations with performers across diverse musical cultures, site-specific and transdisciplinary projects departing from the concert paradigm, and the exploration of performative possibilities in electronic sound synthesis. Rituals, fictionality, chaotic systems, nonhuman temporality, social ordering in performances, and intertextuality and hauntology arising from classical forms are some recurring core preoccupations that underpin his creative process and agenda across different media.

Madiis, today known as Maggia, in Ticino, is the oldest known name of the town, which also gave its name to its river (1225). Although much of its course is still natural, the last few kilometres have been channelled because of the large amount of water it can carry during the rainy season, with the risk of devastating floods. Ironically, the city itself is built on ancient alluvial deposits.

Ludwig Berger is a landscape sound artist, musician and educator whose work engages with the sonic presences of organisms and places, tuning into the different ways they can be perceived. His projects move between interspecies, geological and architectural listening, with a focus on microscopic sounds such as insect communication, plant rhythms and melting glaciers. Through installations, compositions and performances, he unveils hidden processes and develops multiple auditory perspectives on landscapes. Central to his work are the concepts of environmental personality and eco-fiction, which he uses to reconsider the relationships between humans and non-human worlds in the context of the ecological crisis.

Interview with Ludwig Berger

In November 2024, a group of students from Zurich University of the Arts took part in an excursion to Cima Città before it closed, in the Blenio Valley, Ticino - Switzerland. There, we explored the theme of ‘sound encounters’ from the perspective of the environment and sound as an instrument and language. To this end, we used field recordings from Cima as material. What kind of space can be constructed with sound, and how does it envelop us as an epiphenomenon or gesture, an instrument, a narrative, an archive or a stage? Finally, we created a soundscape during a field recording jam on our last evening in Cima Città.

This spontaneous composition invites reflection on the hybridisation of sound forms, between the rigour of a temporal structure and the unpredictability of noise. Our approach lies at the intersection of opposing worlds: between the unexpected and the determined, between events marked by a sequential grid and the ruptures that destabilise it.

Caronte

A piece for Taler Becken (traditional instrument from Appenzell): trumpet and double bass. It is based on traditional instruments. The rural idyll is no longer so present, although only minor technical changes have been made. However, the musical attitude remains the same: the large strings are played in a relaxed manner and the minimal textures are performed very calmly and with plenty of time.

There is a space in between my lips and throat called home explores the unsettling passage between fixed points, inviting us to dwell in the interval. This sound work draws on the female presence in sound art, tracing two resonant topographies: the delicate terrain of a record groove and the cavernous space of the mouth—where the voice emerges, shaped by teeth, tongue, and throat. Through fractured voices and tactile noise, the work persists in instability, questioning how we inhabit transition. Can we remain here, in uncertainty, finding a home in the flow, in the vibration, in the intimate mechanics of sound itself?

‘Zwei Brücken’ (Two Bridges) is a radio play in which human physicality and bridge construction come together. Bridges have always been important points of passage, both literally and metaphorically.
The first bridge:
A daily trauma: the explicit description of an impalement in Ivo Andric's book “The Bridge on the Drina”.

The second bridge:
A rusty, two-lane railway bridge, no longer in use, crossing a small river in the Black Forest and flowing into the Rhine. It is part of my personal environment. (2022, Basel)
Zwei Brücken blends, connects and contrasts sounds, fantasies and emotional experiences from these two situations.

Furka Radio is a non-profit association founded by Lea Graziani and Carolina Catarino Gomes during the In:dépendance artist residency in 2023 at the Furka Pass. Furka Radio is an independent online radio station that highlights music, architecture and art. Going beyond the dissemination of music and sound, live radio broadcasting embodies a form of activism. It acts as a catalyst to empower emerging artists, fostering the exchange of knowledge and overcoming barriers of geography, gender and language.

Systems of Noise by Lea Graziani.
This piece explores how sound can shape our perception of space. Instead of sound following what we see, Systems of Noise reverses this relationship—inviting listeners to construct visual landscapes through auditory experience.
Recorded using contact microphones, the piece captures the hidden vibrations of urban systems—transport, water, infrastructure, and everyday movement. By layering and shaping these recordings, the piece reveals the connections and tensions between these systems.

It encourages a critical reflection on how urban structures interact. Noise, often dismissed as a byproduct of city life, becomes a way to uncover these relationships and imagine new possibilities for the spaces we inhabit.

My city is like yours, constantly changing.
Right now, this is the soon-to-be new metro line. A future line with future passages in areas that were demolished. Everywhere, vibrations, workers, cranes, jackhammers, noises, textures that shape a city, over which I do not have any control. I take my microphones, walk and record these noises. I record them to re-appropriate the spaces and the time that escape me. As I listen, they become reawakened and trigger what had remained silent within our unresisting imaginations of a city.
