Q & A with Author D. Byron Patterson

Q: Byron, what inspired you to write these stories and characters?
A: I created this cartoon lamb character a few years ago. I designed him, gave him a voice and a playful, imaginative world. I'm surrounding him with a group of lovable disabled misfits, some real (like Jonesy) and some brought to life (like Lamby and his best friend Snout). The lamb and the pig are these wounded little toys that continually strive to overcome their disabilities. And the Chinese dragon is actually a special needs character with a never ending desire to fly (even though all he does is fall whenever he tries). I have hours of silly, family-friendly, kid-centric digital audio available here on SoundCloud. 

Q: So tell us about Lamby Lambpants and his world. Where does HE begin?
A: Lamby once was a plush stuffed toy that the family dog happened upon and chewed up one day. There were two Chinese dragons in the area at the time, and one of them accidentally imbued a random bottle cap with ancient Chinese dragon magic. Lamby came to life after the cap was put into his head to cover up the gaping wound the dog inflicted there. I designed Lamby, gave him a unique voice and an imaginative world. I surrounded him with lovable disabled misfits, some real (like Jonesy the Chinese puppy dragon) and some brought to life (like Lamby or his best friend Snout). I fell in love with the idea of a patchwork family of wounded little magical beings striving to overcome fears, prejudices and doubts BECAUSE of their physical or emotional disabilities. Everyone in Lamby's world is damaged or broken in some way, and they learn to trust and support one another as they become better souls. I mean, that's the large hidden part of the iceberg; the stuff ABOVE surface is just a LOT of silly, sweet and funny goings-on. Each individual story is a snapshot of how these characters become more than best friends - they become family.

Q: So, how DO you write about a dragon with special needs? Isn't that kind of taboo?
A: What, is it taboo because I'm writing about a fictional mentally-disabled Chinese dragon and not a fictional human being? Having flaws is part of the human experience. Kids are humans without much experience, but they're not stupid. You just need to write those stories with young, vulnerable characters THEY can relate to. For my particular Chinese dragon, I focus on his actions and emotions affecting others around him. Jonesy is a tender-hearted, puppy-like Chinese dragon who truly believes he can fly (even though he falls when he tries). He never gives up, never stops trying, but his behavior is borderline obsessive. As the characters around Jonesy learn how best to care for and about him, so do young readers. That kind of learning won't necessarily happen neatly or within a single story. In some cases, yes, but as an independent publisher, we're comfortable taking time to build things properly. We have quite a lot of stories published this year alone, and there are more coming.

I've known Lamby's history for so long that I had trouble crafting stories that felt real enough to share with the outside world. Now, there's a rush of creative water from my brain that I can't shut off. Events and ideas are pouring out, and all out of order too.

Q: How do you know where to begin then?
A: Well, think about every person's life as a long series of stories. In the end, we all mostly just come in and out of each other's stories, and usually in the middle or end places and then we try to play catch up. I'll create these Lamby stories the same way.

Q: What would you like kids and their parents to take away from listening to these fun and really dynamic audiobooks?
A: I do my best not to hit kids over the head with obvious messages about one thing or another. The messages are there BECAUSE of the story and not the other way around. Kids are much smarter than that. But I'd love to impart some wisdom they can either take or leave. I believe that life is better lived when you've surrounded yourself with the right people. I believe that you are NEVER as broken as you think you are. I believe that finding the courage to be yourself comes only when you can honestly accept your flaws and imperfections without shame. And firmly I believe that self-esteem is not an entitlement, but something EARNED through acts of charity, compassion and love.

Intro to "A Christmas Mess"

We strive to spread the happy and not the cranky. We do that through various acts of creative expression, but trying to follow that philosophy, especially during the holidays, sometimes takes us to results different than we had initially anticipated. Being Lamby's Dad is a big responsibility, but I wanted to let our younger fans know that even a Dad with the very best of intentions can get a little nutty on accident. I admit that I got carried away with some of my song choices and artistic requests for this year's A Very Lamby Christmas. It created some small chaos in the recording studio recently. Since I need to face what I did, I have engineered "Dominick the Donkey" as is. The result does spread the happy, but I wanted to publicly apologize to Lamby for not showing him the respect he deserves. 

And so, as I close this brief commentary, I take responsibility for what you’re about to hear and also to wish you Happy Holidays before I take my nap.

"Yes, No Goodbyes" - Lamby Lambpants Theme - No Commentary

My name is Lamby. I am a lamb. 

Dad says that I had a very bad day with the dog, and that’s why I have a bottle cap in my head. My cap has ancient Chinese magic inside it. For example (and such as), I now have a magic ability to write. How many lambs do you know that can send email? This lamb can. Yeah, this lamb has mad skills on the Internets, which is how I found your website. (Dad doesn’t know I’m emailing you, Ellen, so it’s a secret for now). I like you because you don’t eat lambs (or pigs, or cows, or kittens). It’s my mission to tell people to stop eating lambs. It’s also my mission to spread the happy, not the cranky, which Dad and Mom help me do (even if I have to take naps).

They sell stuffed toy versions of this lamb on their website to show kids that it’s okay to have a bottle cap stuck in your head—well, that’s what I always say. They call it empower-mint, which is a very good mint for kids who have a disability. I haven’t heard of these kinds of mints that help sick kids, but they sound expensive. The Lamby doll toys that my parents sell are not expensive. And they do lots of good too. You see, for each toy they sell, they give one to a child in need. That’s what spreading the happy is all about. Will you help us spread some love and fleece? This lamb would love to visit your show and sing a song for you. Mom says that I sing like an angel, which makes Dad say that it’s because I fell off a cloud.

This lamb is going to be a very big star soon, so I hope you will consider me for your show. Just like you were a determined little Ellen to get on the cover of Oprah’s magazine, so too shall this lamb be a very determined little Lamby who will email you often until you email back.
