Last school year was a special one at Can CANELA! We made it to a decade, and despite the fact that we've been working tirelessly behind the scenes since the pandemic (right now we have 2 test pressings at home...), we were able to celebrate our 10th anniversary in two of the clubs where we've enjoyed the most during all these years the simple but oh so comforting act of sharing records with people: Café Berlín in our beloved Madrid, and LAUT in what is and will always be our home, Barcelona.

The truth is that we aren't people who like to celebrate our birthdays in a big way, but when it comes to Canela En Surco, it's a different story. It may sound cliché, but the fact is you don't celebrate 10 years every day, and so we wanted to offer a gift to the attendees that would commemorate this day forever.

The gift came in the form of a one-hour mix recorded back to back by our favorite Yorugua Maxi Arrieri aka Fatal with Canela director Breixo Martínez, self-released in a limited run of 50 cassette copies, featuring design by Fatal aka Maxxximiliano himself and an illustration by one of our favorite artists, Martín Funcasta. We gave away the tapes to the first ones to arrive that night at LAUT, as well as to the staff and some friends who have greatly helped us on this path.

Drone, Folk, an unreleased song by Ivy Barkakati, Industrial music, a song that sounds like Sumo but is NOT, oh, and of course a lot of opiates,...

Our funds only permitted this limited run, we would have liked to make more but the idea was that nobody had to pay for a copy (we wanted to give back a little of what people have given us over the years). Many friends have been writing to us to see if we had any copies of the cassette or if we could send them the audio of the mix instead, so we finally decided to upload it to our website for the personal consumption of those who want it.

P.S. Unfortunately for the night at Café Berlín we weren't able to deliver a gift in time (something that we will never forgive ourselves for but that we will try to solve in the future).

"This first RR Waves show is a selection of tracks that we find inspiring here at GGHQ. Had I recorded the mix another day, it could have easily been a completely different set altogether. I'm a huge fan of all kinds of different music, and I love to play like this when I DJ. There is nothing more boring for me than someone playing 1 style all night long and not exploring different moods or sounds. Also, when making a radio show like this, you can play with different tempos, speeds and music from completely different eras, there is a freedom that is sometimes not granted within a club setting. It is too easy to play only 60 minutes of house or techno, and the end result is quite boring for me. I hope the listeners hear something new or exciting in this selection, and the forthcoming additional sets I have recorded. Below you will find the tracklisting if you wish to investigate further. "This 2nd RRWaves show is rough and ready. No fancy mixing or tricks. The focus is on the music, all on 7", and the tracks featured on this session come from all 4 corners of the globe and beyond. There are some contemporary (ish) pieces, some vintage oddities and a healthy dose of lo-fi, crackling, analogue psychedelic funks of many different shades. I pulled all of my 7" boxes off the shelves, hit record and went for it, unplanned, riding the wave. Again, 60 minutes is not a lot of time and I felt that I managed to squeeze in quite a bit of information into this little selection. That's part of the beauty of the mighty 7" single. A small and unassuming format, but oftentimes the most exciting and intriguing, packed with action. I often feel that these are maybe some of the most interesting records I own, and I don't play them enough. Muchas gracias to the Radio Relativa crew for letting drop this one on them, recorded live in 1 take here at GGHQ in South London on Andrew Weatherall's 60th birthday. This one's for him.
