Intentions is the first record to be released on new Berlin based experimental label, NIA. The label name is a Swahili word that serendipitously translates to Intentions. The inception of the label came about at a time of peak isolation, prompting label founders, Collo, Delfiné and Loft Garten to assemble a compilation of tracks from artists near and dear as a form of collective practice. Consequently the compilation echoes hyper-melancholia, fragmented orchestral pieces, yearning ambient and experimental sound design laced with bop worthy club moments.

NIA aspires to move with intention to release music rooted in openness and honesty. The platform looks to amplify sound based practices existing to dismantle and decolonise oppressive racist, patriarchal and capitalist structures. The curation of releases gives priority to underrepresented scenes and artists. Through the releases the label aims to form non-verbal communication, aligning collective ideas and practice building on an innovative and diverse approach to music. NIA looks to have a platform for artists to articulate their vision on a project and have it fully actualised collectively.

We will gradually listen to a sound tour resulting in a diverse palette of colors, mostly deep and of sounds dedicated to the contemplation of space and the passing of time and created from its origin with various compositional techniques.

Born Yallah Gaudencia Mbidde in Kenya and raised in Uganda, MC Yallah has been involved in East Africa's rap scene since 1999. Alternating rhymes in Luganda, Luo, Kiswahili and English, her conscious, poetic and experimental style was slow to creep into Uganda's mainstream. Following a brief but necessary hiatus, she returned to the stage in 2018 with a new lease of life accepting her role as a central component of the Nyege Nyege/Hakuna Kulala family.

"Yallah Beibe" is the fiery follow-up to Yallah and Berlin-based producer Debmaster's acclaimed 2019 debut "Kubali". After her tour plans were cut short as COVID-19 broke out in 2020, Yallah returned to Kampala and started work on her sophomore album at Nyege Nyege's villa. The process was more complicated this time around, developing pointedly from an initial back-and-forth with Debmaster and flourishing as beats appeared from Japanese producer Scotch Rolex and Congolese club maestro Chrisman. The finished album is an international patchwork of futuristic cyber-rap experiments fastened together by Yallah's unforgettable personality and elastic flow.

More charged than its predecessor, "Yallah Beibe" is an apt soundtrack to a challenging era. Yallah is an experienced and versatile MC and channels her layered understanding of the complicated global cultural landscape into 12 stories that skate through trap, dancehall, club and industrial styles. Her authoritative guiding force is never more evident than on 'No One Seems To Bother', a collaboration with Duma's gravel-voiced singer Lord Spikeheart. Trading bars over Debmaster's slippery, bass-heavy rhythm, Yallah and Spikeheart ink an alternative East African sonic landscape, with activated lyrics ("the world is going under, no-one seems to bother") and rasping, death metal-inspired groans.

"Yallah Beibe" is a call to action, a loud siren that's intended to educate the wider world of East Africa's shrouded history and bright future. Yallah's collaboration with rising star Rati Gan 'Bigbung Song' is the best evidence of this, looping Rati's Afro-Caribbean dancefloor flex and Yallah's politicized flow around a twisted bass-heavy beat from Chrisman, joining hands between the DRC, Uganda and the wider diaspora. Tracks like 'Baliwa' and the anthemic 'HERA' meanwhile completely center Yallah's signature lyrical dexterity, playing her tongue twisting raps against Scotch Rolex's pan-global foley-trap splatter. At times, the sounds feel as if they're from their own planet entirely - a fourth world that's rooted in collaboration rather than appropriation.

If "Kubali" re-established Yallah as a force to be reckoned with, "Yallah Beibe" cements her status as one of the world's most exciting MCs, both on record and on the stage. There's nobody doing it quite like her.

'Move Like So Remixes' not only reimagines 2021's EP full of Afro-Caribbean explorations courtesy of Bermuda-born producer Obeka (@djobeka) but also perfectly showcases different approaches to the art of remixing.

Take 'Test System' - a dancehall-infused track that has proven to be the most popular song from the original release with radio plays in Kampire's BBC Radio 1 residency among others - which comes back in a form of three impressively distinct versions. Influential Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue (@dengue) revisit their DNGDNGDNG alias and brilliantly come up with a rework in which jungle breaks smoothly intertwine with reggaeton. Further into the EP you can hear the voice of Swordman Kitala, a talented Ugandan MC with numerous appearances on Nyege Nyege's sister label Hakuna Kulala, who flawlessly delivers his verses in Luganda alongside original beat produced by Obeka. Last but not least, a true gem has been cooked up by DJ Danifox (@djdanifox). Strongly departing from the original, he brings his characteristic sound that ideally sets the tone for closing the release with an almost jazzy feel and a somewhat nostalgic manner (saudade, one may say).

Two remaining instrumental songs from 'Move Like So' also get new versions - and both will be perfect for your DJ sets. Title track receives a speeding up treatment from Ultima Esuna (@ultimaesuna), Mexican artist already gathering much deserved attention for her dancehall-leaning compositions that earned her a place on the 2022 Nervous Horizon compilation. And then there's Bandicut (@bandicut), one of the key figures in the Lisbon's global bass scene, who went all out and delivered a true banger making use of the West African drums from the original song.

At what point does a new tool or technology become so integral to a process as to be intrinsic? And what happens if that technology starts to subordinate its user?

By reflecting on these questions Machine Alliance, the new EP by Irish producer Kerrie on Tresor Records, connects her music to the sci-fi origins of techno and electronic music in general.

With inspiration from classic books and films of the genre such as The Machine Stops, The Matrix, and Blade Runner as well as modern explorations in art and philosophy like Free Your Mind and Technopoly, the EP’s title takes on two opposing but intersecting meanings.

One, based on the potential for machines to take over or replace humans, is a key idea of sci-fi that seems closer to reality with the arrival of machine learning and real artificial intelligence.

The second has a much more positive view, one where the “alliance” is between the artist and machine to create the music, a process she places immense value on, being both cathartic and therapeutic, whilst also being a vehicle of addition and expansion:

“I feel that it’s a collaboration…the machines are precise in their timing and I add the human touch (literally) in the live performance which adds natural imperfections, so we both provide something the other can’t. There’s also an element of growth; the machines get updates and so are always expanding in terms of their musical capabilities. And the more I push my own technical abilities I feel we are growing together in a constant synchronised dance.”

This “dance” results in four tracks (plus three digital-only bonuses) of classic machine funk which combine the aforementioned ideas in sci-fi with a deep lifelong affection for techno. Tracks like Ode to the D, and Technopoly Dream display this love through her choice of sounds and structure, both intentional and subconscious, while Replicants, and Human in the Loop project into other genres to fully round this release off as a contemporary example of music rooted in both past and future.

Featuring 8 different artists from Mexico to Lithuania, Peru, Portugal, Florida, UK and Belgium, ‘Maloca Vol. 1’ outlines the worldly focus of Le Motel’s new label. 

Launching Maloca Records earlier this year, the label’s ethos is to build bridges interlinking disparate yet like-minded musicians dedicated to blending organic electronic and acoustic elements. The global network of makers highlighted on Maloca Vol.1, the label’s first compilation, confabs a terrestrial and borderless percussive sound that has been bubbling in clubs and Le Motel’s orbit. 

Opening the compilation is esteemed Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue followed by Lithuania's DJ JM who has previously released on the likes of Nervous Horizon and Goon Club Allstars, Miami artist and NAAFI affiliate Nick León and Lisbon’s DJ N.K. On the second half of the compilation, there are contributions from the label founder himself, Mexico’s Omaar, UK’s Coen and mysterious artist Tsongo. 

Maloca Records has put out three vinyl releases to date from Oakland’s Farsight, Beijing’s Howie Lee and Le Motel. The label is quickly building a reputation for releasing brilliant forward-thinking club records whilst capturing specific international sounds.
