I think my liking for dark, murky dance music partly comes from the hunger for conflict as an essential building block in storytelling. The ‘story’ metaphor for DJing has been completely overused, even though the conflict part often seems to be absent. Setup, conflict and resolution are always the starting point for any set for me; I’ll fragment, mutate and rearrange them, but these three have to be present. A friend once called it brown sludge with a story, loved that.

Same approach goes here, this time with some pitch black dubstep I had laying around as a literal starting point to a bit of a purge with multiple stylistic blocks.

Everything I play in my eyes ties back to early industrial, which definitely comes from my parents’ love for 70s and 80s wave and experimental music. Industrial (understandably) gets a bad rep but the pioneer movement is so complex: as the birthplace of many genres, but also regarding themes around spirituality, technology, philosophy and economics that are still as relevant 40 years on. Whatever the genre that I’m playing, that connection is always there: trance state, heavy distortion, dub techniques, spiraling synths, exploiting imperfections, drones & field recordings, etc.

Of course, taste keeps evolving, and it’s a pleasure to connect new dots to your baseline taste thanks to all the fascinating DJs in my close circle. It’s a powerful thing, mutually influencing each other with the stuff you play. Don’t think I’d ever be THIS interested in super fast, super minimalist techno were it not for @guia_gui, or the more modern trance bits were it not for @rdvsk, for example.

I started booking at the end of 2021 during the pandemic, when things were starting to look like we could reopen again soonish(April 1st, 2022). In general, our main goal is to present the most valuable experience of the night; to push local night culture by displaying a broad range of peculiar music. Experimental electronic music of all origins, hc punk and everything in between, basically. The Groningen crowd changes a lot, but all in all is open to a lot of different stuff. Finding out what works is easiest to explore based on regulars’ taste. You can book something super progressive, but that connection between sound and city – even if it just 2 or 3 people – needs to be there for me.
