A private press rarity that few know of, ‘Song of Island’ was the third album from pianist Yasuhiro Kohno’s trio, recorded live at the jazz club and live house (gig venue) ‘Again’ in August 1985. Pressed up in small numbers, ‘Song for Island’ was issued on the private ASCAP Records, set up by pianist and band leader Yasuhiro Kohno.

The album is a follow up to Kohno-san’s previous two albums, ‘Peace’ and ‘Roma in the Rain’, released on the cult Aketa’s Disk label. However, unlike the ‘Peace’ and ‘Roma in the Rain’ albums, ‘Song of Island’ has never been reissued before – until now. The title track was included on J Jazz volume 3. This is a very special album that captures a special time in Japanese jazz, when exemplary acoustic jazz was still being performed and recorded by dedicated and talented artists at the height of mid-80s synth pop. ‘Song of Island’ features four original compositions by Yasuhiro Kohno plus a distinctive take on a jazz standard.

Yasuhiro Kohno was born in Nara, southern Japan, in 1953 and made his professional debut as a member of Japanese rocker Eikichi Yazawa’s band before going on to accompany actor/singer Masatoshi Nakamura. As well as recording and performing under his own name, Kohno has also played with American musicians such as Richard Davis and Mal Waldron and continues to perform regularly in Japan.

‘Song of Island’ will be issued as a full reproduction of the original work, with inserts, translated original sleeve notes, plus new sleeve notes, photos, and an interview with Yasuhiro Kohno by Tony Higgins.

We mark the start of the 4th year of FUNK FOUNDATIONS show on www.RADIO.D59B.com 

We will continue this ride focusing on artists, bands, labels, producers from different pockets of USA and few different countries…digging deep and wide into the roots of funk, jazz-funk and all groove related styles.

 

It is a very special show…a well-deserved tribute to a funk royalty and a fellow Rochesterian…Mr. Alfred Pee Wee Ellis.  His bio says that he was born in 1941, in Florida. He moved to Rochester with his family in the M50s. While attending Madison High School he played with jazz musicians around town including Ron Carter and Chuck Mangione. In ‘57, while visiting a repair shop in NYC, he met Sonny Rollins who agreed to give him saxophone lessons. Pee Wee was determined to get those lessons, so he made money to pay for the roundtrip ticker by playing the local clubs in Rochester.  He went on to attend Manhattan School of Music, where he mastered his skills in Jazz.  In 1960, he moved back to Florida working as a bandleader, musical director and writer. 

He joined James Brown Band as saxophonist in ‘65. After couple of years, he became his music director. He worked with the godfather until ‘69, co-writing 26 songs. Pee Wee said that his "jazz influence" merged with Brown's R&B background…to create funk.

 

In ‘69, he returned to New York City and started working as arranger, conductor and producer for CTI and its subsidiary Kudu…collaborating with George Benson, Hank Crawford, Johnny Hammond Smith, Sonny Stitt and many more… He was intricate part in the creation of the jazz-funk style of the 70s.  In the late 70s, he moved to San Francisco and started working with David Liebman. Around that time, he also started recording and touring with Van Morrison…that lasted for 2 decades. In the L80s, Pee Wee regrouped with Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker to form the JB Horns.  In the 90s and 2000s,… he continued his recording and touring career.  It is thrilled to present the works of Alfred Pee Wee Ellis…as usual it is all vinyl show from my collection… loaded with legends and few hidden jams.
