"Moroccan Chaabi music has deep roots in the cultural and musical traditions of Morocco. The term "Chaabi" itself translates to "popular" in Arabic, reflecting its connection to the everyday lives of the Moroccan people. Originating in urban centers like Marrakech and Casablanca in the early to mid-20th century, Chaabi music draws inspiration from diverse sources, including Andalusian music, Berber rhythms, and Arab classical music. Instrumentation plays a crucial role in Chaabi music, with instruments like the oud and violin, and percussion instruments contributing to its distinctive sound. 

Over time, modern Chaabi has incorporated electric instruments and synthesizers, adding a contemporary edge to the genre.
Electric instruments add a dynamic and energetic element to the music, allowing artists to experiment with different tones and textures. Synthesizers, in particular, contribute to a more contemporary and electronic vibe, expanding the sonic palette of Chaabi music. This fusion of traditional and modern instruments reflects the genre's adaptability to changing musical landscapes. It not only attracts younger audiences but also contributes to the genre's evolution, ensuring its continued relevance in the diverse music scene of Morocco. The blend of old and new instruments in Chaabi music highlights its ability to embrace innovation while staying true to its cultural roots.

The new wave of Chaabi music aims to preserve its roots while globalizing the genre. This involves incorporating new lyrics and rhythms, sparking a revolution in music. This movement has influenced numerous labels and musicians to produce innovative albums, contributing to the significant rise of Chaabi music. In every city, for example, you can find dozens of bands playing Chaabi, each adding new elements to the original instruments."

The Copenhagen-based artist Muskila is set to release his new EP, "OK, Fatma," on the 20th of March. The EP takes the listener through emotive club music, incorporating North Kurdish timbres and delving into the realms of bassy dubs. Muskila originally had an EP ready in October last year but decided to delete all tracks and write something completely different that was relevant to the world as he experienced it. The EP was written between October and December 2023 and is a product of how the artist sees the world changing. The visuals for the music portray a contemporary dancer, embodying the concept of being stuck, either physically or mentally.

Furthermore, the EP has 2 remixes and 1 collaborative song. The 1st one from Siu Mata, who has made a name for himself on the club scene with his versatility and genre-bending productions. The 2nd remix is from the Nyege Nyege affiliated artist, DJ Travella, who is responsible for the most exhilarating music of recent years, injecting crackling cybernetic energy into singeli in a semi-improvisational style. Lastly the collaborative song is made with, HEDO HYDR8, an artist who emerges from the rave-rich grounds of Denmark to create immersive, transcendental musical experiences.

Een 2022, il est amené à rencontrer le collectif nantais Spacy Crew, où il est devenu membre par la suite.

Le set qu’il a conçu pour Radio Flouka est pensé comme un sillage vers l'émotion brute et vivante. Mettant face à une réalité du monde difficile et triste mais aussi un dessein espiègle jouisseur d’envolées euphorisantes. Tout ça en passant par l'exploration de sonorités lentes qui pulsent en tandem portant une structure plus organique et plus occulte à une transcendance graduelle rythmée de morceaux plus agiles mêlant lignes de basses et couches de synthétiseurs luxuriants.

Employé de plus en plus fréquemment afin de décrire les productions musicales électroniques SWANA le terme « electro-shaabi » nécessite de se questionner quant à sa signification. 

En effet, shaabi signifie « populaire » en arabe mais cela ne suffit pas à décrire un tel champ musical. Shaabi reviendrait à la pop ? Musique poulaire ? Musique traditionnelle ? Les différences géographiques ne suffisent pas non plus à en déterminer les caractéristiques. 

Ce mois-ci je vous offre donc le fruit d’une réflexion autour du shaabi, précisément égyptien, ainsi que ses transformations dans les scènes électroniques au fil du temps. C’est aussi l’opportunité d’écouter une brève histoire et définition du shaabi originel égyptien remontant aux années 70 tout en découvrant des morceaux passant d’un Shaaban Abdel Rahim à la productrice El Kontessa.
