Inspired by Bronislaw Malinowski’s (1935) Coral Gardens and their Magic, this mixtape features lush forest soundscapes culled from vintage field recordings, excerpts from ethnographic films (Dead Birds, Kama Wasi, and Cannibal Tours), and the vibrant and haunting melodies of bamboo flutes, fugue-like singing, love songs, funeral music, insect electronica and more. 17. Call sign for 108 FM, Radio de la Resistance. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.  September 2015.  [In September of 2015 there was an attempted coup d’état in Burkina Faso. For two weeks the entire city of Ouagadougou was locked down.  All stores, ministries, offices, banks were closed.  The coup plotters took over the radio and television and shut down a lot of commercial stations.  A few days after the coup, however, a pirate radio station took to the air, ‘La Radio de la Resistance’.  The station was broadcasting using a mobile transmitter calling on all Burkinabé to resist, to fight the plotters.  The station would broadcast communiqués and revolutionary songs and a casio keyboard interpretation of the national anthem.  The signal was horrible but I loved their call sign.

Gonzo Ethnomusicology (RIAFC073)

Buddhist prayer machines and Hindu mantra or chanting machines are small plastic boxes resembling transistor radios that play various Buddhist and Hindu prayers and short music loops used for meditation. Found throughout India, China and Tibet, these portable, usually battery-powered, low-fi electronic devices are popular across the region. This mix features samples from these devices and the FM3 Buddha Machine brand, as well as a number of artists who manipulate them to create new sonic textures.

Duckfood invites you to the music of Tunisia. This mixtape features different styles of music but consists predominantly of Mezoued, a genre of popular traditional music based on North African Amazigh scale rhythms. It incorporates Tunisian Darbouka drums and a bagpipe called a mizwad/mezoued. Originally the music of the countryside and the working classes, it is often played at weddings and parties. The themes of Mezwed are typically social: immigration, racism, family and love. Nowadays with electronic influences traditional sounds get stretched into new fusions.
