Dream In Dream

An exploration into the tempestuous yet mellifluous world of South Asian film and pop music. This mixtape journeys through Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, and Urdu cinema from the 1970s and 1980s, featuring compositions by legends like M. Ashraf, Sathyam, and the maestro himself, Ilaiyaraaja. These artists and sorcerers, with their uninhibited ears, fused elements from every imaginable genre into an alchemical orchestral opulence—enhanced by the absurd vocal pyrotechnics of some of the region’s greatest playback singers and punctuated by some of the wildest and most raucous breaks ever pressed to wax.

A mixtape drawing together contributions from friends around the world, including folks running independent record labels, record producers, poets, community radio producers, musicians and others. 

All these tracks were recorded directly, drawn from community radio producers and collected directly from the artists, or through direct communication with some independent record labels. All the works were pulled together with the intention of sharing a mix that can point in a tiny way to the depth of different artistic and activist voices from around the world who have Palestine in their hearts.

TSAPIKY MIXTAPE (RIAFC151)

In 1970s Burma, a quietly innovative music scene emerged during a time of increasing political isolation and state censorship. Despite limitations, local artists found creative freedom through cassette culture, using tape as a tool to explore and share a rich blend of sounds—traditional Burmese melodies interwoven with the influences of Western rock, soul, and psychedelic music. Many musicians engaged in copy thachin, adapting foreign songs with new Burmese lyrics, creating something both familiar and entirely their own. My Final Answer to Life, compiled by Gary Sullivan (Bodega Pop) for Radio Is a Foreign Country, offers a glimpse into this era through a selection of tracks from 1970 to 1978—music that reflects a culture in motion, reshaping outside influences into something deeply personal and resonant.
