Three is the Magic Number: Ternary Rhythms in Global Bass Music (RIAFC093)
A deft set of hypnotic, slow-burning global bass grooves from Brussels-based DJ, producer, and sound explorer Rafael Aragon. In this exclusive mix, Rafael blends different genres of global bass using ternary rhythms inspired by regional folk genres, including Moroccan/West African gnawa, Tuareg guitar music, Malagasy-Reunionese maloya, Brazilian berimbau, Mexican guaracha, and more.

Three is the Magic Number by Rafael Aragon (RIAFC093)

The audio presented here was lifted from a VHS tape posted online, then broadcast during our weekly show on a local LPFM, and recorded from home using a GRUNDIG AM/FM/shortwave radio on the night of SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2022. It features the legendary RAFIG "REMISH" HUSEYNOV, the GODFATHER OF AZERBAIJANI ELECTRIC GUITAR, and one of the great GUITAR GODS FROM THE MIDDLE EAST, performing a blistering set at a wedding in the town of AGHDAM in 1991. The entire performance, as Ben Wheeler and Anna Harbaugh note on the CAUCASCAPADES BLOG, is an orgy of insane electric guitar ornamentation using trills and bends, as well as some heavy analog delay and overdrive. There are also unpredictable tempo changes and shifts between major and minor 3rds, impromptu exchanges with a clarinetist and accordionist, and some slide guitar using a glass bottle. Remish smokes cigarettes throughout and, at one point, plays with one hand while drinking vodka with the other.

Sundanese Mixtape (RIAFC095)

My first introduction to Sound Reporters was the mysterious and beautiful Amazonia 6891, a lush sound collage of field recordings and experimental electronic sounds, echoes, and waves, which we featured on an earlier mixtape (RIAFC025). Much later, quite by accident, I came across a spectacular field recording of frogs calling for rain in Mae Hong Son, Thailand (also featured in an earlier mixtape – RIAFC090). The field recording was made by Fred Gales, co-founder of Sound Reporters. We began corresponding and, thanks to good fortune (mine and yours), he agreed to put together a compilation of Sound Reporters recordings for Radio is a Foreign Country.

As you will hear in this curated mix, Fred is not only a prolific field recordists and musician, he is also an avid collector and student of the world’s music. (He does an amazing show called Klankbron on Concertzender Radio – Amsterdam, the Netherlands). It begins with Sail 85, a stunning 14-minute orgy of foghorns (recorded in the harbors of Amsterdam) combined with a thick atmosphere conjured up by synthesizers and other electronic sounds. This is followed by a series of raw field recordings from West Papua, Suriname, East & Central Africa, and southeast Asia. Enjoy!

Engbeté, Sinakpa and others playing 'guerilla' music on the bulubu pot bow. A wire is pulled tight across a cooking pot, and plucked and beaten as the tension changes. The bow is usually attached to a hut and can make the whole shelter vibrate. Recorded by Louis Sarno in the Central African Republic on the 23rd April 1993.
