Lovin' The Orbit from the album Make Pictures With The Sound.

The release title is inspired by a quote from legendary British music producer John Leckie, whose voice guides us into the album on opening track 'Beautiful Satellite'. With this album the Saafi Brothers do just that; make pictures with the sound, taking us on a breathtaking journey through their universe of sound, spiralling out from their deep roots in the Psychedelic Dub genre.


Keeping alive the Saafi Brothers’ reputation for chilled out eclecticism, the musical and emotional range for which they are renowned is very much in evidence here. From the rainforest tinged Dub Funk of ‘Ritualized Space’, through the epic deep Techno Sci-Fi soundscape of ‘In Far Away Places’ to the wigged out Acid House of ‘The Possibility of Change’, the album has much to offer for any connaisseur of contemporary Electronica.

The Atmospherica Exotica radio shows aim to present the deep and hypnotic side of techno through Hungarian DJ, Roland Handrick's and his guest's mixes, focusing on more atmospheric and sophisticated trends. His first Ozorian experience of this music had a great influence on him, both musically and atmospherically, this is why he started diving deeper into the soundscapes he heard there and which inspired this show.

Released on Earth Day of 2018 and inspired by the natural beauty and magic of the Pacific Northwest, this mix is a three and a half hour meditative journey with a focus on storytelling and organic layering. Intended for deep listening, relaxation, meditation, sound healing or contemplation, it is best described as a sound collage of many of my favorite artists' most tranquil and spaced out compositions layered with my own field recordings as well as many other recordings I dredged up from the infinite archive of the internet. This mix reflects my own imagination of a life lived along a foggy coastline, meandering between night and day, cities and forests, rain and storms, beaches and caves. Best enjoyed on some quality headphones with eyes closed or in a quiet place with good speakers, chill environment and a comfy chair.

I've included a link to Coast Protectors, an indigenous-led group focused on protecting our coast from the threat of tar sands pipelines and tankers. I've donated to them several times before and if you enjoy this mix and can spare the funds I'd love it if you could give them a donation for the work they are doing.

Rather than giving a regular tracklist, I'd like to acknowledge and thank all of the artists whose musical creations were used to make up this soundscape, as well as the land, water, animals and urban environments sampled. This mix contains music by the following artists:

About this edit :
"Chances Are" is a piece that's been in my collection for years now. In early 2000 I was fascinated by the "1 Giant Leap" films, produced by Jamie Catto, founding member of Faithless. Similar to the "Playing for Change" series, the aim of the films was to bring together different musicians from all over the world for individual songs to show how much the world has grown together. In 2004, Catto then recorded and released the album "As Deep As We Can Go Without Drowning", from which the song "Chances Are" was taken. He and his band "The Happening" did this, as he said, in a break from all the stress of touring. They just wanted to do something completely different. The special thing about it is that the complete album was recorded improvised by the musicians on 3 days. Every song and every note was played only once.

E463 | What is Greek music? For our guest Panayotis League, it's no one thing. Rather, it is diversity that defines the many regional musical traditions of Greece and the broader Greek diaspora. In this episode, we discuss League's ethnomusicological research on Greek music in diaspora, and we explore the history and transformation of Ottoman Greek music before and after the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece. As League explains, Greek music in the Ottoman Empire was inextricably linked to the musical traditions of neighboring Turkish, Armenian, and Sephardic communities. However, the First World War, the Second Greco-Turkish War, and the exchange of populations that sent the entire Greek Orthodox population of Anatolia to Greece eliminated spaces of intercommunality where Ottoman music thrived. In our conversation, we discuss how the intercommunal music of the Ottoman Empire survived in Greece among exchanged people who pioneered the new rebetiko style that would reshape Greek popular music. We also discuss how the music of Ottoman Greeks fit into a larger diasporic communal dynamic in places like the United States.

Panayotis League is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Florida State University and Director of the Center for Music of the Americas. He publishes widely on Greek and Brazilian music, dance, and oral poetry, and his monograph "Echoes of the Great Catastrophe: Re-Sounding Anatolian Greekness in Diaspora" is forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press. He performs the traditional music of Kalymnos and Crete throughout the Greek diaspora, and in 2019 was named a Master Artist by the Florida Folklife Program.

Chris Gratien is Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, where he teaches classes on global environmental history and the Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region of the former Ottoman Empire from the 1850s until the 1950s.
