Born and raised in Northern Arizona, Michelle Branch got a record deal with Madonna’s Maverick Records when she was 17 years old. She released her debut album The Spirit Room in 2001 which earned her the first of four Grammy nominations. In 2002 she won for her collaboration with Carlos Santana, “The Game of Love”. She’s just finished writing her 6th studio album which she will start recording in the new year. She splits time between Nashville, TN and Charleston, SC with her husband Patrick Carney (of The Black Keys) and their two young children.

L’envie #172 :: Michelle Branch

Ben Lee began his career as a young teenager in the early 90’s, in the Australian lo-fi punk band Noise Addict, who were discovered by taste-making artists Sonic Youth and the Beastie Boys. That began an extraordinary career that has been both eclectic and eccentric, and still growing more strange and fascinating each day. Whether collaborating in one-off projects like the Bens (with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller), producing a Grammy award winning music/comedy album for Margaret Cho (“Cho Dependent”), duetting with Sarah Silverman, writing a psychedelic children’s musical with American literary legend Tom Robbins, or simply strumming away on his guitar and putting out over 20 solo albums of songs that have made romantics swoon for multiple generations, Ben’s career is always (to quote his song “Ache 4 You”) “confusing…but never dull”. 

The past few years has seen a renewed interest in Ben’s eclectic approach to creativity, gaining a new audience on TikTok for his offbeat sense of humor, and his 20th solo album “I’M FUN!” which Rolling Stone called “the best of his career” which featured collaborations with Jon Brion, Shamir, Sadie Dupius, Zooey Deschanel and Christian Lee Hutson. Now, collaborating with his wife, actress Ione Skye, on their company Weirder Together, Lee is supporting other artists create bizarre and beautiful content spanning everything from podcasts to music to fanzines to film projects. “Ive always done what seemed fun to me at the time. There is no other compass for me than what is enjoyable…I don’t look at life as a linear adventure,” he explains “I very rarely know where Im going next - I follow what I am passionate about and where I can be useful.”

Lefty Parker is a troubadour and a poet,’ says Dave Bixby. Parker began performing at the Cactus Cafe in 2018, drawing inspiration from songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams. His debut album, Off San Gabriel, was released in 2021 and recorded by Mat Davidson of Twain. 

In 2024, he released 13, recorded live in Dale, TX. Year-round, Lefty can be found playing in dives and living rooms across the country. He is currently based in New York.

For more than three decades, Johnson has been a steady, prolific presence in the Texas music scene. In 1991, he broke out with alternative rock band Funland, and was the leader of beloved indie-rock act Centro-matic and alt-country outfit South San Gabriel. He’s also worked with Jason Molina, David Bazan, Matt and Bubba Kadane, Vic Chesnutt, Mark Eitzel, Jim James, Jay Farrar, Bob Mould, Jason Isbell, John Moreland and many other iconic American songwriters. He makes folk art paintings centered on historical baseball figures, which have been shown in galleries across the country.

Although she was raised in New York City, it feels as if Katie Schecter time traveled here from a chicer, more sonically cool yesteryear of the future. Now based in Nashville, she effortlessly blends the half-cool, half-kitsch of Music City that is neither new, nor timeless; she herself is it all.Schecter’s journey as a solo artist began with a self-titled EP in 2017, followed by her second full-length release Bad For Business in 2020, solidifying her place on the map as a boundary-pushing musician. Along with her creative soulmate Nick Bockrath, Schecter joined forces with British producer and engineer Ben Baptie to fully capture her idealized sound. L’envie #217 :: Ora Cogan

Treasures Untold : A Modern 78 RPM Reader is a beautiful 10 x 10” 155 page hardback book with CD, ltd ed of 1000, numbered foil stamp. Released on Record Store Day US & UK - April 12, 2025. 
 
The CD contains ten covers of 78-era songs by artists such as Luther Dickinson, R.Crumb, William Tyler, Muireann Bradley, Gwenifer Raymond, Michael Hurley and more. Eight of the ten songs were recorded specifically for the project. 
 
The writing is by collectors, ethnomusicologists, dealers, archivists and producers, including an interview with Ian Nagoski and Dick Spottswood, 14 year old collector and DJ Jay Burnett, Eli Smith (Brooklyn Folk Festival), John Heneghan, Nathan Salsburg and more. Book designed by Grammy-nominated Barbara Bersche (Lomax Haiti box set, Harry Smith B-sides box set).

As anyone lucky enough to see her perform in Daniel Romano’s Outfit knows, Julianna Riolino is a firecracker. Lost in music, prowling the stage with a mix of menace and contempt, her demeanour recalled the heyday of the iconic rock and roll front person. L'envie #219 :: Julianna Riolino

Chris Cohen was always a quiet kid. In fact, this introversion was one reason he began playing music as a toddler—to communicate without speaking to identify with others without the direct representation of words. It has worked, too, with Cohen’s terrific stint in the mighty Deerhoof and his own captivating art-rock act The Curtains, preceding production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, and Marina Allen. Somewhere along that long way, Cohen started writing lyrics. He found that, though it didn’t come naturally, the process offered a new sense of self-discovery and reckoning, a way to see himself and the world from unexpected angles. His three twilit albums of casually complicated pop during the last decade radiated these epiphanies: handling family strife, navigating advancing age, and understanding social woes.

L’envie #221 :: Chris Acker

Macie Stewart is a musician and multi-disciplinary artist based in Chicago, IL. 
Stewart primarily works with piano, violin, voice, guitar, and synthesizers. Stewart is a distinguished, go-to collaborator who Pitchfork credits with “making some of the best tracks of the past five years transcendent.” From a very young age Macie was drawn towards sound; learning to communicate with music while simultaneously learning to communicate with words. Stewart’s experience as an open collaborator and composer in her own right has led her music to become fluid and expansive- drawing on all that has come before while intentionally searching for something new. “Mouth Full of Glass” was her debut solo project: released fall of 2021 in the US and as an international release in fall of 2022. Since then, Macie has created two full length sound installations, "Hisako's House", a site-specific multimedia piece involving dance, visuals, and music with choreographer Robyn Mineko Williams; as well as "The World Doubles in Size", a quadraphonic sound installation through Experimental Sound Studio at Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago, IL. Stewart is also a founding member of the band, Finom, who have released 4 full length records, created the multi-media theater performance, “Full Bush”, and have been touring internationally since 2016.

L’envie #223 :: A.P. Rodgers

PHILM was launched in April of 2020 as a depot for unseen film photos of the band Phish shot by fans.  

By 2021, the account had delivered a book and expanded beyond the jam world -  featuring all kinds of music new and old. 

“I needed to get the jam band fans to eat their vegetables. If you like the Disco Biscuits you should know who Can is,” says Brian aka PHILM.  

In the last five years PHILM has released magazines, more books, merch and a newly launched podcast.  

Brian, who also founded the band Ex Cops, continues to also make music with House Band - an all improv group featuring various LA session musicians.
