Named after Ipswich Town’s 1985-86 relegation season sponsor and defunct local radio station, Radio Orwell channel a love of Flying Nun style antipodean jangle, Yo La Tengo’s noise-pop and the literate indie of the Go Betweens.

Formed from the smouldering embers of some bands you’ve never heard of, the band came together after four of the five members convened to write and record over a birthday weekend. Upon realising the studio owner had average drum chops and that studio services could be bought for a couple of bottles of Super Bock, the line up was complete.

Fronted by James Severy, once dubbed ‘the most talented artist ever to come out of Ipswich’ by Tom Robinson (was he in any way inebriated?), his vocals are backed by the yin and yang guitars of Chris Brett and Marcus Neal and underpinned by Jack Pynn’s bass and Joe Bailey on drums.

2017 saw Radio 1 play from Huw Stephens and packed out shows with some of their favourite bands including Grumbling Fur, Chorus Girl, Superglu, Gaffa Tape Sandy and Model Village.

Already in the diary for 2018 are gigs with Dingus Khan, cult indie-rockers Wussy at Colchester Arts Centre and a headline hometown show.

Forthcoming single 'Stolen Sense of Wonder' (30.03.18) has already been debuted by Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music and is accompanied by a dreamy 16mm stop frame animation from the 70s made by the drummer’s outsider-artist dad.
