A full panoply of bubbling, semi-submerged, electro-acoustic abstraction, lysergic drones and oblique, polymetric time signatures recalling the work of Italian avant-jazz outfit Gruppo d’Improvvisazione while simultaneously picking up distant echoes from 'Pangaea' era Miles Davis, 23 Skidoo, Source Direct, Squarepusher, The Heliocentrics, This Heat and Mosquitoes.

'Fizz-cracking drum machines and sparring breakbeats knitted with eyes-shut chord progressions and a seemingly mystic sampler that spits pure magick vibes'.

Bristol based producer Gilbert steps into the time machine with this wonderful EP that sonically and spiritually connects to the early works of Warp pioneers such as B12, LFO and Speedy J.
First track Ylem starts with a strong kick but is nevertheless a subtle builder that directs you straight to deep space. Shift the Focus, the opener on the flip, may well be the EP’s most suitable track for the (dreamy) dance floor - the cut’s dense melodies and subtle 303 flavours work well with Gilbert’s rhythm section and would slowly but surely draw you into a psychedelic swamp when played in a club. The tracks Lucid Dream and Are We Alone are even a bit more otherworldly and fitted for an armchair listen. A big tip for anyone into layered, mind bending UK techno!

Not certain if the ominous Third Place is down in the basement but surely it must be somewhere deep in the London underground, otherwise it's unexplainably how Will Hofbauer can release music with such a vibe – from deep to dub(step) – on labels like Homage, Yusoul or his own and beforementioned imprint Third Place. Will's last EP Where Did All The Hay Go? on the latter left quite an impression in the scene and on virtual dance floors gaining the support from Ben U.F.O. Now the infamous sandwich-maker is working on new material without rushing things but keeping them easy and chill, a preference or rather tendency the artist has discovered, especially over the months of living in a pandemic habitus. As versatile as Will seems to be – at least when it comes to music – he not only compiled the latest edition of the art:cast series, but also shares his covid-favorites, speaks about the Co-Select concept and is livin' it up like Ja Rule in the early 2000s – the best song for a Friday night. However, we are two days early for that and happy to prick up our ears to music from Shackleton to Missy over to rRoxymore and Off The Meds.
