This is our starting point: a world where the contribution of women to radio is status-quo, where the secrets of the Heaviside are ours alone. We create connections between radio artists now (real) and radio artists then (real and not real), between grains of sand and the ocean.

Waves are Waves. Static. A needle across a dial. Signals everywhere. On everything. Pinging up and bouncing back. Waves make Waves. There are secrets to be had on radio: messages that are both public and private. Espionage happens on air waves, and teenagers request songs for secret loves.

SISTERS AKOUSMATICA RADIO!

Sisters Akousmatica was selected to play a live remote performance for the International Women’s Day event, Celebrating Women in Sound, 8 March 2018, at the Great Hall of Goldsmiths University, London. 
Sisters Akousmatica read in Glebe, walked in Hong Kong, radio played “Chapter One: Signal fantôme ~ Onde fantôme” in London, using field recordings, hurdy gurdy, pink noise machine, electromagnetic pick up, voice and radio broadcast. 
This piece takes its script from the first chapter of NM, SK to be published as part of The People’s Library in 2018.
This examine further the phenomenon of anonymous/clandestine radio broadcast as a vehicle for rewriting/reimagining women's role in sound (art, music and broadcast), explored broadly through The Silent Key. 
The Silent Key generates its own content and also uses other events and projects as a interrogative, parasitical way of creating and collecting content. Seeding investigations of The Silent Key was developed with funding from South Australian arts organisation Vitalstatistix, through their national hot-housing project Adhocracy. 

Sisters Akousmatica's work will be presented in The Room of Sounds in Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil on the 10th of August 2018.

As Sisters Akousmatica, Dr Julia Drouhin and Phillipa Stafford create curatorial and written projects concerning collective radio practices and auditory-spatial exploration that support and cultivate the voices of women and non-binary people in public space. They have worked to produce large-scale public transmission projects, a retreat for women and non-binary artists, workshops and commissions with organisations such as Mona Foma, Liquid Architecture, Next Wave Festival, the University of Tasmania, Testing Grounds, The Channel, Signal, Radiophrenia and Arts Tasmania. In 2017 their eponymous project 3CR presented Sisters Akousmatica project to be the recipient of the Community Radio Association of Australia’s Excellence in Music Programming award.

Helene Thomas is founder of The Wayfinder Mobile Storytelling Studio. 
She’s been a collector of stories since she was 19 but it wasn’t until 
she moved into audio storytelling that she found her true passion. She 
spent six years travelling between East Africa and Australia 
collecting stories for ABC Radio National and her PhD research. She 
now tours around Tasmania in The Wayfinder studio, mapping her own 
homeland through stories.

“I consider every story a living spirit. This is why I take my time 
and allow myself to go deep into the lives of others as they share 
their lifeworlds with me. It’s a privilege to step into other people’s 
lives and tell their stories.”

“Life Seen Through A Sista’s Eye” is a forthcoming Herstory podcast series created and curated by storyteller and radio broadcaster, Sista Zai Zanda. In this sneak peek episode, Sista Zai sits down for African High Tea with an Afro-literary icon who shares tips and tricks of their artistic trade. The podcast winds down with a selection of beats and performances presented at the legendary Melbourne matinee event, The Pan Afrikan Poets Cafe.
 
Sista Zai Zanda is a storyteller, educator and curator of the Pan Afrikan Poets Cafe – an Afro-Literary matinée of beats, performance and poetry. Since 2015, Zai has spoiled audiences in Melbourne and Sydney with over 100 performances by African and First Nations storytellers including feature performances by renowned international artists Mahogany L Browne (NYC, Nuyorican Poets Cafe), Inua Ellams (Nigeria/UK), Kat François (Trinidad/UK) and Jive Poetic (NYC). 
Amongst career highlights, Zai has co-produced a sold out Pan Afrikan Poets Cafe event at Arts Centre Melbourne (#BlackGirlMagic), worked as a Youth Zone consultant for one of Africa’s top 10 international arts festivals, hosted the 2018 Melbourne Writers Festival Opening Night Gala, curated and produced live radio broadcasts of the Pan Afrikan Poets Cafe and is currently engaged as an Artistic Associate with Melbourne’s Due West Festival.

In this international premiere, Sisters Akousmatica and their custom transmission ute will gather the voices of a continent-wide community choir performing with thousands of kilometres between them. The new work by Annika Moses coordinates the simultaneous performance of participants dispersed across Australia, and broadcasts it live as part of Sisters Akousmatica’s Moonah Community Radio project. Participants are invited to create noisy and inharmonic dialogues, sing with the buzzing of static in their voice-boxes, and form a national sisterhood of radio-song.

Annika Moses is an emerging sound artist based on Whadjuk Noongar land, in Perth, Western Australia. With a background in folk music and a fascination with the voice, her practice intersects text-based composition, radio arts, and seeks electronic/weird-pop/alternative-folk housings for vocal explorations under various monikers. With a particular interest in the intersections of the trivial and profound, her work displays care and delicacy while showing a curious attention to minute intricacies in sound. Her work has been premiered and exhibited in festivals including Totally Huge New Music Festival, Fairbridge Festival, Audible Edge, FRINGEWORLD, WAMfest, and installation works at Cullity Gallery and Mundaring Arts Centre. Annika is a core member of the Perth exploratory music label Tonelist, the curatorial intern at Tura New Music in 2019, and a presenter on Perth community radio station RTRFM 92.1.

Inspired by Kim Gordon’s Proposal for a Story [I-IV] texts (1977, for 35mm slide) this work is at once a song or a series of song fragments in interaction; instructions to participate, a blank space to sing with, and a framework to write one’s own song; a sketchbook of ideas and compiling of process.

Lisa Busby is a Scottish composer, vocalist, and improviser based in London. Situated across experimental music, performance art, and pop song, her practice often utilises the found and the prosaic, and manifests in various entangled modes – long-duration and site specific work, video, non-standard scoring/notation, “anti-production” techniques for electronic music, and live improvisation for sound/body. Instrumentally she works with voice, turntables, hardware and software electronics, and electric guitar.

Currently, Lisa is one of the Sound and Music New Voices 2019 [UK] and is participating in the Social Acoustics Research Project at the University of Bergen [Norway]. She performs and composes with bands The Nomadic Female DJ Troupe and Rutger Hauser; is part of The Lumen Lake music collective and record label; and is a member of the art / education /politics group Common Study based at Somerset House Studios.
