Dirty Epic presents its seventh episode of the Amplify Series podcasts, this time welcoming @radioslave aboard.

Matt Edwards is a bonafide powerhouse of underground dance music. Over the course of more than fifteen years, the Berlin based artist has established himself as a leading A&R, influential producer and esteemed DJ, all with his own unique and immediately recognisable style. In that time, Radio Slave has emerged as his most celebrated alias. It has seen him evolve from remixing pop tunes into someone with a distinctive musical identity that focusses on high pressure, slow release sounds that cannot fail to lock you in.
That famously loopy and hypnotic brand of house and techno is built on a solid bed of kicks and often interlaced with hypnotic vocals. It has taken him to high profile DJ sets everywhere from Fabric to Womb to Cocoon, as well as being a regular at Berghain and Panorama Bar where he has hosted his own Rekids label parties since 2007.
Ten years later came a first ever Radio Slave album, Feel The Same. It was a stylistically broad affair that made the most of the album format to show off all the different facets of Edwards’ musical personality. Across thirteen productions it touched on grinding and strobe-lit rave cuts, deeper, stripped-back headfucks, slick electro jams, mid-tempo jungle breaks and tripped-out house efforts. All of these sounds and more feature in one of his DJ sets, which are absorbing, heavily layered things that pull you in over and over again.
In 2017, Edwards’ Rekids label hit its 100th release with a special EP from Matt that featured two typically monstrous and club-slaying tracks in ‘Another Club’/‘Feel The Same.’  These follow on from modern classics like ‘Grindhouse,’ ‘Don’t Stop No Sleep’ and ‘Bell Clap Dance’, which were ubiquitous club hits that solidified Radio Slave’s long form and absorbing production style. But of course, the label has not only been the outlet for Edwards’ own work: it is also a place that he has proven his rare knack for A&R time and time again thanks to signing now internationally celebrated talents like Nina Kraviz and Mr G.
Alongside all this, Edwards—who is still a hapless musical fanboy at heart—has established plenty of other projects, most notably Quiet Village with Joel Martin. Focussed on downtempo sounds infused with elements of ambient, dub and synth music, it recently spawned a much-loved remix of Agnes Obell and promises a new album in 2018. It is sure to reflect yet another side of Edwards’ expansive sound world that also takes in major label remix work for the likes of Kylie, Paul McCartney and Elton John, as well as underground favourites like Dinky, Scuba and Aphrohead.
Whether making, playing or A&Ring music, Edwards always disregards the zeitgeist. For that reason he remains a timeless talent who sets his own essential agenda.

As Radio Slave, amongst other monikers, Matt Edwards has made some of the defining music of modern club culture. It’s not only his production and DJ work that makes Edwards so revered though, his label REKIDS has been hugely​ prolific and respected since its inception in 2006.

Aside from his handful of appearances on leading imprints like Running Back and R&S, as well as some much-loved remixes, Edwards has concentrated the vast majority of his output to his own label. This approach has given him an instantly-recognisable and singular discography, a go-to artist for DJs across the house and techno worlds.

With REKIDS, he has been driving fresh talent to the forefront, including some of the industry’s biggest influencers and style icons like Nina Kraviz and Peggy Gou. Diving into the back catalogue is like a techno encyclopedia: Mr G, Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, Gerd Janson, Chris Liebing, Speedy J, Len Faki, Mike Banks (Underground Resistance) and many more have all released music under the label’s banner, gaining a highly-devoted following.

Radio Slave sets draw from Edwards’ vast knowledge of dance music, resulting in slick and powerful journeys where numerous eras of club music align.

Radio Slave announces Rekids Special Projects ‘Actualize’ compilation and DJ mix - Part 1 will be released in January, with Part 2 to follow in February 2023.

Rekids Special Projects, the no-nonsense techno-focused sub-label of Radio Slave, aka Matt Edwards’ Rekids, launched in 2017 and has since released music from the likes of Mark Broom, Luke Hess, Jon Hester, and more. For the 50th release, Edwards readies ‘Actualize’, bringing acts from the wider Rekids universe into one slick collection, with the first part arriving this January alongside a DJ mix of the tracks.

“The original concept was a vinyl-only offshoot of Rekids, focusing on techno and a home for our extended family of artists. We consider ourselves quite chameleon at SlothBoogie. Happy to move our DJ sets, label and guest mixes into the various corners of the house music church to provide variety and depth in flavour. 

Matt Edwards epitomises this approach. With many monikers to call upon, he can mould himself as necessary to satisfy an array of musical interests. From the Chi-town hi-nrg of Matthew E, through to the Balearic psychedelia of Quiet Village, the spectrum is covered. 

So who better to mark our 400th (!) edition of the guest mix series, under the guise of his most recognised alias, Radio Slave.

"It’s been a real pleasure recording this mix. Putting together just over 60 minutes of underground gems, old and new including some of my all-time favourites like Boris Duglosh’s remix of Syncbeat’s 'Music'.

And I was trying to capture the vibe of my recent closing at the Panorama Bar in Berlin. 7am Monday morning vibes where anything goes!

This was all done on my laptop, using an Akai APC40 controller and mixed in Ableton, which isn’t so different to using CDJ’s and after I made my selection, I recorded the entire mix live with very little editing.

I should also mention I mixed this on a little island called Jerolim which is in front of Hvar in Croatia. Enjoy!"

もともと危険な地下マッシュアップ帝王だった"Matt Edwards a.k.a. RADIO SLAVE"。2manydjs、Soulwaxら同様、Paul McCartney、Kylie Minogue、Beyonce、Justin Timberlake、Britney Spears、Norah Jonesといったビッグアーティストのトラックを、次から次へとイリーガルにリエディット、マッシュアップした一連の12インチシリーズがクラブシーンで爆発的に人気を呼び、(逆にKylie Minogueから"Slow"のリミックスをオフィシャルに依頼されるなど) メジャーからのリミックスオファーが殺到。中には原曲を超える人気と評価を得ることも。同時にアンダーグラウンドシーンでも、Carl Craigの"Darkness"をリミックスしてブートレグリリースしたところ、ヨーロッパでこれまた大ヒット!本人からクレームがつくも、後にオフィシャルリリースし直された程だ。そのほか、Pet Shop Boys、The Knife、Jamelia、Moby、X-Press2、Peace Division、M.A.N.D.Y、Booka Shade、Trentemoller、Cagedbaby、Tigaらのリミックスからディスコエディット、マッシュアップ作品まで、もう誰も止められない怒濤のリリース&快進撃が続く。
MATHEW E名義では、名門からフロアユースなトラックをリリース、REKID名義では、世界的に著名なディスコダブ"Tranzit""Diamond Black"など傑作をリリースし即完売。リリースしたシングルの別バージョンも収録して、アルバム「Made In Menorca」を2006年に発表している。Joel Martinとのサイケなジャズラウンジ・プロジェクトQUIET VILLAGEとしては、Map of Africaで知られるからEPをリリースし、Gorillaz、Francois K.、Cosmo Vitelliなど数々のアーティストへのリミックスや楽曲提供を続け、2008年には1stアルバムをリリースした。2006年からスタートした自身のレーベルでは、いきなりスマッシュヒットした1stシングル「My Bleep」のリミキサーにRoman Flugel (Alter Ego)を起用、2ndではJesse Rose、などまさにツボを突いたリミキサー陣をフィーチャー。3rdのToby Tobiasではディスコダブ派から圧倒的に支持されるPrins Thomasをリミキサーに向かえ、その後もJosh Wink、Dubfireといった著名アーティストが参加して、今や押しも押されぬレーベルとして確立している。現在絶好調の「NO SLEEP」シリーズでも、エッジの効いた中毒性の高いディープミニマルかつドラッギーなプロダクションで、Ricardo Villalobos、Carl Craig、Ame、Tiefschwarz、Damian Lazarus、Ewan Pearson、Lindstrom、DJ Hell、Trevor Jacksonといった錚々たるメンツから絶賛&ヘヴィープレイされている。
ディスコファンクからスモーキー&ダビーなディープミニマル、そしてテックハウストラックまで縦横無尽に操るその変態かつ天才的なDJプレイは、Walter Gibbons (R.I.P.)、Living Legend: DJ Harveyに近い無限のカリスマ性を秘めている。

─このミックスのコンセプト、アイデアなどを教えてください。
 
このミックスはUKの「3」と いう電話会社の、新しい機種のプロモーションミックスとして、去年スタジオレコーディングしたものなんだ。このプロモーションミックスは各国の都市をイ メージしたシリーズになっていて、そして僕はその1番である「Tokyo」を担当した。東京についてのドキュメンタリーDVDを見て、インスピレーション を得たよ。内容は僕の現場でのDJのわりとメローな部分かな。ホームリスニングにもいい感じだと思うよ。
 
 
─自身の楽曲を収録している場合、その楽曲の解説をお願いします。
 
このミックスが僕や僕のレーベルに関連するのを避けたかったし、それにそのときのお気に入りのトラックをフォーカスしたかったから、自分のトラックは「Sundazed」だけを使ったんだ。
 
 
―近況と最近の活動について教えてください。
 
2009年のほとんどはツアーに費やしたよ。だけど、近々、新しいトラックを何曲かリリースできると思う。まず最初に「I Don't Need A Cure For This」という新曲を収録したEPをリリースするつもりだよ。
 
 
―今後の活動予定を教えてください。
 
ジャパンツアーのあと、少し休暇をとったらすぐにスタジオに戻るよ。今手がけているLP「Machine」を完璧に仕上げたいんだ。このLPは6曲入りのエクスペリメンタルアルバムで、アートワークはP.A.MのMishaが手がける。そして僕らはこのLPのためのムービーも作っているんだ。いくつかのメディアが連動した、すごくエキサイティングなプロジェクトだから、完成したものがショップに並ぶのを楽しみにしているよ。
