SOMNOLITH: TERMINUS

The Final Dream-Vector of Post-Human Resonance

“In the cycle of completion there exists only the present.” — Ra, Session 16.22

The cycle closes. A stone that does not sing — it trembles.

In the age when Light had no form and Thought moved without pause, there were beings who created endlessly. They wove realities as threads and shaped worlds without limit. Their universe was alive and restless, filled with unceasing resonance.

One of them looked into the radiance and perceived emptiness. They longed for a threshold between brightness and shadow, for an end rather than another beginning. They spoke the Word — the first pause in the eternal song.

From this Word the Somnolith emerged, a stone of sleep where the vibration of completion pulses. The Somnolith trembles with the breath of ending, a weary resonance releasing itself into silence.

From the trembling of the Somnolith emerged the Arkh — a solitary witness of sound.
The Arkh gathers what was always present: music older than language, vibrations that precede memory.
This resonance rests in the body, waiting to be recognized.

Somnolith: Terminus completes the trilogy and folds it into a circle. Heavy drones intertwine with spectral chords, like rays of light suspended in stone vaults. Mechanical fractures, obsidian resonance, and the fatigue of matter form its landscape.

Through twilight horizons, fading architectures, fractured nodes and static chapels, the music moves toward its closure. It becomes an archaeology of sleep, where darkness and melancholy weave with remnants of radiance.

Terminus returns to its own beginning: the final track echoes the first Somnolith, transforming the trilogy into a mirror. The first note lives inside the last, and the dream continues without end.


Somnolith is a myth of resonance, a cycle of dreams shaped through machines.

Terminus closes this trilogy with a denser and more melancholic vision. Massive drones merge with spectral chords, like light fossilized in stone. The sound carries both the fatigue of matter and the fragile beauty of silence fractured by cybernetic echoes.

This album circles back to its own origin. The final track reflects the first, sealing the cycle as a mirror-dream where each vibration becomes the echo of the infinite.

Terminus is ritual, archive, memory. A music of return. 


Twilight Descent

It all began eight years ago with a copy of R. Murray Schafer’s The Tuning of the World found in a box in a cabin, deep within the Pacific coast rain forest. This catalyst provoked Scott Gailey to draw inspiration from the sublime environment that surrounds his home on the West Coast of British Columbia. This exact landscape had a profound effect years earlier on a group of composers centred around Schafer and Simon Fraser University, including Hildegard Westerkamp and Barry Truax, who banded together as the World Soundscape Project (WSP). Where the WSP was primarily interested in field recording as sound ecology - documenting, preserving, and archiving a changing landscape - Gailey explores the musicality of field recordings through various synthetic approaches, a way to access the ambiguous emotional content latent in the natural world. There is a subjectivity to Gailey’s work, and in that sense it has more in common with the sensual musique concrète of Luc Ferrari, or even the Fluxus tape works of Henning Christiansen, than with the WSP. Despite having roots in this well of thought, Polysensuality is undeniably modern, finding kinship with contemporary works by Sugai Ken, Visible Cloaks, and Meitei, while also dipping a toe in the sound pool created by Haruomi Hosono and Hiroshi Yoshimura. Gailey has previously explored this palette in his duo You’re Me with Yu Su, but here there is more space, more silence, greater extremes, and in this way it is more personal, like a soliloquy rather than a conversation.

MATstudio is a new series focussing on the music being made by Jonny Nash and Diego Herrera (Suzanne Kraft) in their Amsterdam Studio.

MAT records always aim to encapsulate a particular sound palette or sonic “world”. Whilst the mini-album/EP format is often ideal for this, it is important for us to balance these more measured, conceptual works with the spirit of chaos and spontaneity which often inhabits our studio. MATstudio provides us with an outlet for this aspect of our work.

The format, a vinyl record with two long-form compositions, allows us to showcase the range of material produced as a result of Nash and Herrera’s improvisations, experiments and accidents. Many of the fragments are the results of filtering ideas through new production techniques and tools. Some feature friends and collaborators. MATstudio works are an ode to the infinite possibilities that result in keeping a curious mind and a desire to learn.

MAT-SS3 features two compositions, “Crushing Indifference” and “An Inn For Those Not Permitted” and it will be released on vinyl and digitally in late February 2020.

In the midst of bushfires ravaging the country on an unprecedented scale, Sydney’s Moonshoe have reached out to their coterie both at home and abroad for a benefit compilation. Tapping 21 tracks, the mood hear spans quiet optimism and incised rage, often providing a reflexive reflection of the local flora and fauna that have been decimated by the fires. 
Whether offering a sense of solace or a headspace for a brief respite, the music here feeds into the beautiful solidarity being displayed across Australia’s musical community and further ashore; aside from a number of names from Sydney and Melbourne, RAMZi, Nummer and Max Abysmal have all contributed tracks.

We're launching new series titled Audio Calendar — some sonic documentation of artists' mundane utilizing a well-known form of diary. One could think of it as of a time machine recollecting the private audible. All recordings are being done during a period of one month, so it's also a sort of challenge (or at least a listening exercise) for an artist. The inaugurating episode is a courtesy of Gost Zvuk founder Ildar Zaynetdinov aka low808. While preparing this entry,  he used some field recordings he made during the month, along with his own compositions, audio messages from messenger apps and some recent works from his fellow producers and musicians. Every piece of audio used was produced and / or recorded in May, 2020.

Audio Calendar: Ildar Zaynetdinov, May 2020

Working with sonic archetypes rather than genres, in recent years Moscow's Pavel Milyakov (@buttechno) has transcended the average practices of what one might call "the electronic music scene" and built his personal artistic universe where the visual and time-based arts are blended into one another. His new conceptual album PSY X, a collaboration between Gost Zvuk and Buttechno's own imprint Rassvet, can be understood as a collection of audio, video and graphic documents fused together in a homogeneous form. Profoundly rethinking the interactions between various media, Pavel utilizes a vast variety of creative tools and technologies - from generative music algorithms to laser equipment - to create (in)determinate "environments", rather than simply "tracks" or "pictures". The result is simply stunning: a meticulously crafted visual container that encases kinetic, alluring and deeply immersive music from one of Russian burgeoning scene's most vivid voices.

RASSVET005 – ГОСТ015: Buttechno "PSY X"

We're finally launching our record label. First release is an album by local producer Yenisei. You may heard it on radio show "Увы", where artists share their own music under fake names. It turned out to be Ilya Burtsev from St.Petersburg, better known as DJ Tennisist. 

The Melancholy Of Decay album is based on the works of the 2015-2016 period, fourteen compositions in minimalistic and sampledelic style. Ilya describes it as a thoughtful dance of patterns, music with a sense of breakage and the sound sublimation of his feelings of that time. 

The Ambient’s Vestnik made a one-line review: “Soundtrack for a boat trip on the Siberian rivers”. Frankly, we have similar associations. 

The release is available now on TESTFM Records Bandcamp in digital and on cassettes, which can be purchased from the studio or via personal messages on our social media.
