Prolific yet reclusive California producer Billy Bates aka Mr Saturday is known amongst his friends as a Rad Dad & a master of Digital Dub. Connoisseurs of the genre will know that for a brief period in the 1980s, drum machines & synthesizers dominated the Sound Systems & Beer Gardens of Jamaica, & for some Dub Heads, this illustrious era represents the missing link between King Tubby & Basic Channel. Squirrels On Film is delighted to present this collection of Bates' 21st Century Versions & Rhythms that take inspiration from that golden era of Machine Dub. Over ten tracks Bates explores a wide world of warm bouncy sub-bass & cold sharp drum machine rhythms, swimming in echoes & splashes of digital reverb. Bates imbues these mixes with a vital spontaneity that pays homage to the Jamaican originators of this form, who never let the machines steal the human spirit from their work. Echoes Of The Future is available in a very limited edition of hand-dubbed cassettes & the digital version features two special remixes by sometime Dub Techno Wizard Kit Clayton, who revisits the late 90s Minimal Dub Vibes of his legendary Cytrax imprint, effortlessly bringing these Rhythms from the sunny beaches of California to the smoke filled warehouses of Berlin. Whether practicing the latest dancehall moves with your crush moves or relaxing with a spliff in the backyard, Echoes Of The Future is the ideal soundtrack.

The 60's were a good era for 'psychedelic' music - at least, this is what's said. Allow me some visual clanging and flip that 6 to a 9 and talk about the Seattle 90's, also effluent in the 'psychedelic':

"I’ve been listening to old Nirvana bootlegs. I can say my music is influenced by the smashing of instruments at the end of their gigs. Each one is a unique orchestration but within a structure until it exhausts itself. It’s not random or just noise. There is a timing and build of tension. It is even more dramatic to only hear it rather than to watch it.

Kurt Cobain used to make music by surfing the radio and piecing it together with no editing, like early musique concrete collages. He had an old cassette recorder where you have to push the record and play buttons together and then push pause. You can hear the clicks, the getting up to speed..."*
