On our way to Ozora this Saturday afternoon our guide will be GABRIEL LE MAR of Saafi Brothers, who you can catch this summer both at Pumpui and The Dome.

GABRIEL LE MAR is a music producer, living in Frankfurt/Germany, releasing electronic music with a special focus on deep DubTech sounds and Dub inspired TechHouse.His mission remains the same today: exploring electronic music with a dub mindset. With an open mind and always in a search for fresh musical experiences, Gabriel Le Mar likes to integrate himself in different artistic constellations with his dub-inspired TechHouse project Dublocation as well as with the artistic collaboration with Dr. Motte. With his projects Saafi Brothers and Aural Float, Gabriel composed ambient, space and experimental sound scapes.
With Aural Float he worked on audiovisual concepts: as a team they did the artistic supervision of SPACENIGHT, a prototype of a TV-concept, utilizing spectacular film- and documentary footage from outer space with music made on earth. SPACENIGHT became a success on german television and soon reached cult status among the young night watchers until today. On his albums Gabriel produced tracks that are tailored for the dub inspired clubber, combining different playful approaches of Dub with the functionality and stringency of techhouse music. Bridges are built by energetic and minimal grooves. Solo and with his projects Gabriel Le Mar appeared at festivals like Time Warp, Deichbrand, Merkwürdiges Verhalten, Pollerwiesen, Reworks, Roskilde, Sziget, Tribal Gathering, Fusion, Hadra, Ozora…

THE SOUND OF GABRIEL LE MAR On the floor Gabriel is playing a set with live-overdubs that always celebrate the moment in a jam from DeepTechHouse and Techno. His DJ sets are traversed by soulful and minimal nuances. “Live i like using little mixers and other sound control tools in order to do real-time sound changes paying respect to the fact that every live situation has it´s own dynamics concerning the people, the acoustic situation in the room and of course emotional states of the people and me. I like using both: analog media like turntables and cd-players as well as digital equipment that makes it easy for me to bring the sound of my studio to and on the floor. Concerning energy and flow I love going through waves – flowing grooves, sometimes pushing and forcing, and deep soundscapes that make you dance and feel.”

As Dualism accepted to record a studio session for our Freaky Kitchen Setblock on the Zurich based GDS.FM Internet Radio, I'd already got my Christmas present!

The two artists share life and work together, spreading love and having good ideas like the deep.slow.emotional concept, running the own label Numbolic and making a lot of good things happen.

Their set introduced me from the first minute to foggy musical landscapes and spiritual highness; from then on I wasn’t able to stop listening. The slow and carefully selected progression of catchy rhythms and hypnotic sounds makes of this set a milestone for Freaky Kitchen, so that it will be very hard for me to select the next one! ;-)

Bio:
Gilles Wasserman is a Brooklyn based DJ, music digger and emerging producer known for his exceptional ear for innovative and quality electronic music.
Originally from Serbia, Gilles’ music career kicked off when he landed a job at a local radio station in Pancevo, a small town just outside Belgrade. Suddenly a whole new world of music opened up to him and he was introduced to DJing for the first time. Throughout his seven years working there, Gilles refined his skills and ear for quality music and found himself gravitating towards b-sides, and dub versions of releases with minimal and deep house grooves.
In his nearly 20 year career as a DJ, Gilles sound has evolved with Laurent Garnier and his F Communications label, Brique Rouge records and German minimal house counting as early influences. By the early 2000s, Gilles found himself drawn to a select number of producers like Wighnomy Brothers, Adultnapper and Steve Bug. By this point he was also beginning to realize he was getting inspired by non-electronic artists as well, especially artists like Nils Petter Molvaer and Bugge Wesseltoft. Today he looks to indepent underground labels for inspiration such as Kann, SoHaSo, ESP Institute and Hivern Discs who all are widely known for nurturing innovative talent within the industry.
Moving to New York in 2006, Gilles began dabbling in promoting, hosting after hours parties in lofts and on rooftops from Little Italy to Brooklyn, feeling out what would later become a more refined event series known as ‘Fiction’. Establishing himself as a staple figure of the New York dance music scene, in 2015 together with his life partner Irina Kotik he joined forces with Joe Foxton, and Steve Graham who previously founded promoting team Fiction. Known for their incredible summer boat parties, Fiction have established a great reputation for creating intimate events for discerning lovers of house and techno that combines innovative talent with state of the art sound and production. Gilles has had the opportunity to share the decks with Ripperton, John Talabot, Nuno Dos Santos, Baikal, Andre Lodemann, Love Over Entropy, Matthew Dear, Davis, Marvin & Guy, Eagles & Butterflies, Aera and Sandrino to name a few. He’s also a co-founder of Fiction Lab, a music platform whose goal is to connect the New York underground scene with talent from across the world and to present what is popular in melodic electronic music.
With impressive portfolio of gigs already behind him at New York’s premier venues and parties including The Cityfox Experience, Output, Elsewhere, Analog BKNY, House of Yes, The Brooklyn Mirage, and TBA, as well as at Serbia’s ‘Exit Festival’ in 2016 
Currently focusing his efforts in 2018 on music production, Gilles is spending as much time as possible in the studio refining his production skills with several tracks already in the works. Expect to hear a lot more from this emerging talent in the years to come.

¿Why Numbolic??

Numbolic was born out of the idea to have our own little playground since it enabled us to do whatsoever.
Its important to us that our label shall be considered as a whole. We wanted a name that symbolizes what we do so you know what you gonna expect when listening to our stuff, similar to a movie title chosen for a motion picture. 
also we wanted something that was non-existent before. well at least regarding a google search at that time. 
The Name Numbolic is kinda mix between the words 'Numb & Symbolic & Diabolic' since we like the lower & higher consonants more then the ones inbetween.

¿How would you describe the sound of your label?

Deep, smart & unconsumed music that doesn't follow current trends!

¿label core artists?

Yes, although there's a number of talented artists that have released on Numbolic we wanted to keep the labels structure simple & flexible. Our core artists are: Dualism, Lineas de Nazca, Kane Roth, Geoff Bell, Hidenobu Ito.

¿Digital or vinyl, which do you prefer?

Above all we like music, regardless of its format.
Well.. It's nice to hold something in the hand that we can relate to. vinyl of course has an unmatched performance and we love its analogue & warmer sound. On the other hand it's sometimes cumbersome as well as heavy to carry in a bag.
digital media is alot more flexible to deal with and has its obvious advantages that we benefit from.

¿What is the future of marketing in electronic music? Do you think it should be free? should we get back to vinyl?

Now that's a rather complex question.. at least from our perspective. Since today's marketing business model will change rapidly, revenue needs to be generated elsewhere. We believe however that music will be free available on dedicated channels.
Our technical achievements already found its way in our behaviour in terms of how we consume & listen music. There's no way we're going back to vinyl, it will remain as niche product though.

¿What new strategies can help a label or an artist to promote his music in the age of free content?

Since the music market gets more and more confusing we think labels & artists should work on their individuality.
There's a number of possibilities (to do's & not to do's!) in terms on how to promote.
1. Avoid spamming others with a new release on Beatport & Co. Good & exceptional music will always find its way
2. Be creative, research & think conceptional
3. make an effort and you shall find out!

¿Do you think digital sales have downgraded the quality of production? or democratized and made more available the possibility to create a label, benefiting the industry?

We live in a fast moving world. Equipment Manufacturers making us believe that making music is a snap. There's an uncountable number of new music & artists. On the other hand digital technology has brought us stunning new talents & music. There's alot of pro's & con's.
We think however the music industry is about to cannibalize itself and on the scale of things, music unfortunately has tremendously decreased in terms of quality!

El fino sello suizo de techno, Numbolic, nos comparte una muestra de la música que están produciendo sus core artists para esta 4ta edición de nuestro viaje visitando los mejores sellos del techno.

En esta cuarta edición de nuestra exploración de las mejores disqueras del techno, tenemos la aparición de la disquera de minimal techno suiza Numbolic, el sello bajo el cual produce Líneas de Nazca, proyecto de Luca Ortega, curador de Surf the Label. En este caso los dueños de la disquera y productores de Dualism nos platican sobre los orígenes de su sello, su estilo musical, y nos comparten un set exclusivo en el que figuran los artistas de casa.

El sonido de Numbolic se catacteriza por una auténtica refinación que no hace concesiones a las últimas tendencias de consumo, por momentos hipnótico y oscuro y siempre dueño de sonidos bien logrados con formidables grooves.

Disfruten de este set, sin duda uno de los más estimulantes de lo que va de la serie de Surf the Label.

¿Por qué Numbolic?

Numbolic nace de la idea de tener nuestro propio patio de recreo, un espacio en el que podemos hacer lo que queramos.

Es importante para nosotros que nuestro sello discográfico sea considerado conjuntamente. Queríamos un nombre que fuera un símbolo de lo que hacemos, para que así la gente sepa que esperar cuando escucha nuestra música, un acercamiento similar a escoger el título para una película, también buscábamos algo que nunca hubiera existido antes —bueno, al menos en términos de una búsqueda de Google en aquel momento.

El nombre Numbolic es una especie de mezcla entre las palabras “Numb” (adormecido) “Symbolic” (simbólico), y “Diabolic” (diabólico), ya que nos gustan las consonantes más altas y bajas más que aquellas en medio.

¿Cómo describirían el sonido de su disquera?

¡Música profunda, inteligente y sin consumir que no se rige por las tendencias de ahora!

¿Cuáles son los artistas principales del sello?

A pesar de que hay muchos artistas muy talentosos que han sido lanzados a través de Numbolic queríamos mantener la estructura del sello sencilla y flexible. Nuestros artistas principales son: Dualism, Lineas de Nazca, Kane Roth, Geoff Bell y Hidenobu Ito.

¿Qué prefieren digital o vinil?

Ante todo nos gusta la música, no importa en qué formato venga.

Pues… es agradable tener algo en la mano a lo que nos podamos relacionar. Claro que el vinilo tiene un desempeño inigualable y nos encanta su sonido análogo y cálido. Por otro lado, a veces es estorboso llevarlo en una maleta.

El medio digital es mucho más flexible y tiene las ventajas obvias de las cuales nos beneficiamos.

¿Cuál es el futuro del marketing de la música electrónica? ¿Piensan que debería ser gratuita? ¿Deberíamos regresar al vinilo?

Esa es una pregunta muy compleja, al menos desde nuestro punto de vista. Tomando en cuenta que el modelo actual de la industria de la comercialización cambiará rápidamente, los ingresos necesitan ser generados de algún otro lado. Sin embargo creemos que la música será accesible sin costo en canales especiales.

Nuestros logros técnicos ya han encontrado su camino en nuestro comportamiento, en especial en la manera en la que consumimos y escuchamos música. De ninguna manera regresaremos al vinil, sin embargo, se mantendrá como un producto de nicho del mercado.

¿Cuáles son las nuevas estrategias que pueden ayudar a una marca o un artista a promover su música dentro de la era del contenido libre?

Ya que el mercado de la música se vuelve más y más confuso creemos que los sellos y los artistas deberían trabajar en su individualidad.

Evita spamear a otros con un nuevo sencillo en Beatport & Co. La música excepcionalmente buena siempre encontrará un camino.
Sé creativo, investiga y piensa conceptualmente.
¡Esfuérzate y ya verás!
¿Creen que las ventas digitales han degradado la calidad de producción o han democratizado y hecho más accesible la posibilidad de crear un sello, así beneficiando a la industria?

Vivimos en un mundo que se mueve muy deprisa. Los Equipment Manufacturers nos hacen creer que hacer música es rápido y fácil. Hay una cantidad incontable de música nueva y artistas. Por otro lado, la tecnología digital nos ha traído talentos y música nuevos maravillosos. Hay mucho a favor y en contra.

Creemos que la industria de la música está a punto canibalizarse a sí misma, y en la escala de las cosas, la música desafortunadamente ha disminuido tremendamente en cuanto a calidad.
