Stepping in for Kat this month is Hull’s Ctrl Alt Del events and podcast series frontman Danny Eyles. Over the last 13 years he has brought some of the best underground and minimal top spinners to play at his parties, and invited global DJs and artists to appear on his mix series. He’s also a producer with various releases under his belt, sharing label space with artists such as Shonky, Silicon Soul, Nico Lahs, David Squillace, Robert Owens, John Tejada, Ion Ludwig, and Ilario Alicante, to name a few.

Keeping within the theme of Kat’s self-titled “distant dreams” show, the mix delves deep down into minimalistic electronic sounds, so expect plenty of rolling percussion, wonky synths, mind bending vocals, spacey strings & breaks.

Tout au long de l'année, laissez-vous emporter par une vague musicale qui explore les frontières des musiques électroniques, dévoilant des horizons sonores nouveaux et inexplorés.

Pour cet énième épisode, c’est l’artiste mehdee qui est invité à nous partager son univers resplendissant. Originaire de l’est Marocain, mehdee est un artiste enthousiaste au sens large, d'abord aiguillonné par des sonorités plutôt World dans la consonance de son pays d’origine. Son style est un genre de fusion, incorporant la house, le disco, la synth-pop, l'électro et la new beat, et dans une mesure sonore irradiante qui le fascine, l’univers Downtempo. mehdee se réjouit et se nourrit des découvertes et du façonnement de ses connaissances au fil du temps. Een 2022, il est amené à rencontrer le collectif nantais Spacy Crew, où il est devenu membre par la suite.

Le set qu’il a conçu pour Radio Flouka est pensé comme un sillage vers l'émotion brute et vivante. Mettant face à une réalité du monde difficile et triste mais aussi un dessein espiègle jouisseur d’envolées euphorisantes. Tout ça en passant par l'exploration de sonorités lentes qui pulsent en tandem portant une structure plus organique et plus occulte à une transcendance graduelle rythmée de morceaux plus agiles mêlant lignes de basses et couches de synthétiseurs luxuriants.

Un positionnement substantiel qui appelle à l’auscultation de cette humble expérimentation et le message qu’elle enveloppe.

Bienvenu dans un univers sans frontière, celui de mehdee.

Made of Magma is out via Kajunga Records on May 17th. We hung ten with elusive clump of stardust Sleem Gleam (aka Ryote) to get up to speed on the record. 

NP: What is sleem about the gleam?

SG: That’s the slime, the squiggle, the off-kilter, the acid, the midwest grit, the tubular factor. Paired with a humble glimmer you get a wacky little combo. It’s serious in a silly way, or vice versa. The Sleem Gleam alias originally formed to be a member of the synthpop duo Slurpuff. The band inevitably didn’t release any of the tunes we were working on, but we had fun and created interesting lore around our characters. Sleem Gleam had to live on and evolve beyond that.

NP: Track A2 is “Totally Pitted.” It zips, it soars, it’s totally far out. It embodies the style of DJ sets I’ve heard you play in recent years. Overall, the project and record have a different sound than Ryote releases. Did the project form instantaneously, or did it take time for it to evolve?

SG: Totally Pitted was actually the first track I started working on within this sonic ecosystem. That was at the end of 2019. I wanted to make faster music. Banging, but not too abrasive, more like rock music or something. Most of my inspiration was coming from surf rock, new wave, and upbeat psych stuff, so I tried to combine some of those elements with a techno/electro structure I was much more used to. The bass line, zappy sounds and general structure of this track sat dormant for over a year. My friend Brandon recorded some guitar parts for it, and it had a brief phase of being a full-on surf rock track. To fit my vision a bit more accurately, I eventually reworked and paired back the guitar to let the bass line and percussion shine. The track got finalized in 2023 so I could play it at TGB, where I always aim to deejay upbeat surfy stuff.

NP: Should we anticipate more from both Ryote and Sleem Gleam? Will the projects co-exist?

SG: They’ll definitely co-exist. As my tastes as an artist have grown and changed, I’ve alway been fine with simply expanding what Ryote can be, whether that’s fast, slow, art, music. It all intersects for me. The concept and mythos behind Sleem manifested itself so quickly that it demanded to be its own thing, truly an alter-ego. The essence of the project needs to stay pure and concise. I have more Sleem tracks to release, and I definitely wanna ride the wave as long as I can.
