Soul Jazz Serenade with Andy Coco Episode 67  - Fundraisin'!

When East St. Louis’s Miles Davis was just one year old, a tornado left a 12-mile trail of destruction across central St. Louis. “Maybe that’s why I have such a bad temper…” he later reminisced, “that tornado left some of its violent creativity in me.” Just like a tornado, Miles Davis would swirl new sounds into jazz music’s landscape many times over.

He began in the 1940s with the lightning-fast complexity of “bebop,” then his “cool jazz” simmered in a melancholy mood, and “hard bop” stirred in a gumbo of blues and gospel. “Modal jazz” turned music into an improvised math experiment, and finally in the 1960s and ‘70s, his “fusion” and “funk jazz” periods saw Miles mixing in the psychedelic sounds of groups like Sly and the Family Stone. What he played one day he might never play again, but throughout his decades-long career, he was always recognizably “Miles Davis.” The sound tying it all together was the cutting and clear trumpet blast that he first perfected as a teenager in East St. Louis. 
 
By his passing in 1991, Miles Davis was recognized as the most innovative jazz musician of all time. Alongside fellow St. Louisan Clark Terry, he’s one of five trumpeters in history to be presented the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

St. Louis has long had a fraught relationship with the NFL. Every St. Louisan could tell you about the Rams leaving after the 2015 season. And many could also tell you about when the Cardinals left for Arizona in 1988. But fewer could tell you about St. Louis’s first troubled NFL team—the St. Louis All-Stars. 

The St. Louis All-Stars played their first and only season in 1923, only three years after the formation of the NFL. Football fans and league officials had high hopes for the St. Louis team—after all, the team was going to be in one of the biggest cities represented by the nascent league, and it was going to be owned and coached by Ollie Kraehe, a local football star who had wowed fans when he played at Washington University. 

Those high hopes were quickly dashed, though. The team had trouble signing good players, and St. Louis football fans simply didn’t come out. Only 800 fans showed up to see the team’s home opener, and they witnessed a scoreless tie. And things didn’t get any better from there. Over the course of the 1923 season, the team would only score 14 points total—and all those points came in the team’s only win. The team was quietly folded after the 1923 season, ending an embarrassing start to professional football in the River City.

Not too many people can say they’ve set 14 records, but Arthur Kennedy Jr., a Black speedboat champion can. Kennedy Jr. was born to Arthur (Art) Kennedy Sr. And Ruth L. Kennedy. At the tender age of 8 years old, he found his love for the sport and went on to have an impressive career for about thirty years racing throughout the United States and Europe. If you’re wondering where his love for speedboat racing came from, it began when he watched his father, Kenndy Sr. race. Eventually, they’d even become a father and son dynamic duo and competed together. 

Arthur Kennedy Jr., who was also referred to as Butch, was destined for greatness and others saw it to. Mark Spencer, from Powerboat Magazine, wrote in May of 1992, “Arthur Kennedy was to boat racing what Jackie Robinson was to baseball. They both broke the color barrier in their respective sports, but much more important than the hue of his skin, they were first-class competitors.” Kennedy Jr. and two others, William R. Allen and Edward S. Lingston Jr. founded St. Louis Outboard Club that was later renamed the Gateway Boating Club Inc.

At the Missouri Historical Society, we are particularly excited because we opened a new exhibit in 2025 called Collected and it features Kennedy's story and artifacts within it. In the exhibit at the Missouri History Museum, you can see a battery powered model of a racing boat that was used by Kennedy Jr. “This model is representative of a type of craft, a catamaran style power boat that was used by him for inshore competitions on rivers and lakes across the United States.

Today St. Louis’ famous Hill Neighborhood is known for its great Italian food and culture. But what is lesser known is what originally brought the Italian immigrants to live there.
One answer lies underground—in the rich clay deposits south of today’s Forest Park. That clay helped build St. Louis, mined and turned into the city’s iconic red bricks, as well as roof tiles, and sewer pipes.

In the late 19th century, the area wasn’t called The Hill. It was Fairmount Heights, home to German and African American families working the local mines and brick factories.

In the late 1800s, Italian immigrants arrived—mostly single men at first, living in boarding houses near the mines. Over time, their families joined them, and a tight-knit community took shape. They built homes, churches, and schools, blending old-world traditions with new lives.
Irish immigrants were doing the same nearby, in what would become Dogtown.

Today, the mines are long gone—but traces remain. Berra Park once held Laclede Christy Mine #7. And those humble shotgun-style houses? They tell the story of the modest means of the immigrant workers who built them.

History of Note - The Hill

As far as state nicknames go, Missouri has a pretty memorable one—the Show-Me State. But, for as much as “Show Me” has become part of the Missouri heritage, relatively few people know where the phrase comes from.
 
The most common story about the origin of the phrase dates to 1899. That year, Missouri congressman Willard Duncan Vandiver gave a speech that contained the line: “I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me.” The crowd thought this was a wonderful turn of phrase and it quickly spread.

However, others argue that the phrase was coined during a Colorado mining strike in the early 1890s, when mine owners brought in Missouri miners to try to break the strike. However, the inexperienced Missouri miners made frequent mistakes. This led other miners to say “That fella’s from Missouri, you’re going to have to show him” any time they gave a task to a Missouri miner. From there, the phrase spread as a way to describe Missourians—with Missourians even embracing the saying as evidence of their down-to-earth practicality. 

No matter where the phrase originated, by 1905, Missourians had adopted it. The Show Me State was here to stay.

Maya Angelou’s words, “Still I raise,” remains etched into the hearts and the minds of those who read her poetry. The daughter of Bailey Johnson and Vivian Baxter Johnson graced the world with her presence on April 4, 1928. Due to hardships within her parents’ marriage which led to a divorce, she moved to Stamps, Arkansas, with her paternal grandmother, Annie Henderson, at the age of 3 years old. She and her brother Bailey—who gave her the nickname “Maya”—continued to move back and forth between their grandmother and parents’ homes during their adolescent years. 

Her career took off after receiving some training as a professional dancer and singer. It was at this point in her life that she changed her name to “Maya Angelou” in 1954. That same year, she traveled to Europe and appeared in a production of Porgy and Bess and learned to speak many languages. 

Angelou returned to the United States and joined the Harlem Writer’s Guild and produced songs, short stories, and poetry while living in New York. She also became involved in the civil rights movement and worked within the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. 
Angelou published her first autobiography in 1969, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and it was an instant success and appeared on the New York Times’s nonfiction bestseller’s list, was nominated as a National Book Award, and has since been translated to different languages. Since her first publications, Angelou has received many awards for other works she’s produced.
