Dub and bonus beats mixes were the hidden treats on many '80s hip-hop 12-inch singles – tripped out tracks where re-imagined bass, drum and tape edit arrangements took center stage, and echo-drenched rap fragments floated in and out like ghostly guests. These mixes were also showcases for a generation of transcendent engineers/editors/producers – e.g. Aldo Marin, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, Marley Marl & others – at an early moment when hip-hop, R&B, electro and dance music comfortably comingled. Flying solo at the controls on this episode, I explore an hour of ’80s hip-hop 12-inch bonus beats and dub mixes, from the slept-on to the classic.

Super Rare recording of the legendary 'Trip' party in New York City at Club Mars from 1989. This is what an actual old school Hip Hop jam sounded like. DJ Duke of Denmark on the turntables with the legendary Grandmaster Caz and Almighty Kay Gee of the one and only Cold Crush Brothers as Master of Ceremonies (and kicking a few freestyles). This is before all clubs went 'Bottle Service' so literally 2000 people are on their feet, dancing, and screaming. You can even hear a fight break out that the MCs shut down quick fast. Even Russell Simmons get shouted out. It was a highlight of my life to be a part of this party. RIP Beasley 79.
