Bangladesh only a decade after its 1971 independence war with Pakistan created a number of bands who combined the traditional songwriting techniques with influences from western acts. There is an obvious influence of Reggae, New-Wave, Funk and Psychedelic Rock throughout most of these recordings. Most of these bands released directly to cassette since there wasn’t much of a budget to produce vinyl LP’s. However this low barrier of entry resulted in many bands picking up their instruments to have a go at stardom. This mix here is a selection of the vast variety of 80s and 90s Bangladeshi bands who created a unique sound of melancholy yet infectiously funky tunes. These recordings reflect the heart and minds of the Bangladeshi people still torn by war but also holding on to the hope of a brighter future.

"With the Red Bull Music Festival currently underway in Toronto, the Choice Mix turns its focus on an artist who has had a profound impact on the local music scene. Born in Tokyo to Bangladeshi parents, Raf Reza moved to Canada at the age of nine. Trips to the UK fanned the flames of his fascination with club music, which eventually led him to DJing and producing. Today he is revered as an esoteric DJ who continuously pushes the sonic boundaries of the dancefloor. Reza’s studio productions mirror the multifaceted nature of his DJ sets — he draws melodic and rhythmic considerations from a broad range of styles such as house, wave, techno and dub. His debut 12” EP, PROTO, was released on Cosmic Resonance Records in Toronto. His next release Moods from the Multiverse will be forthcoming on Edmonton label Heart To Heart. His Choice Mix incorporates dub, acid, eastern Asian sounds and a range of off-kilter beats."
