One of the first Canadian producers to set up shop in Berlin’s electronic epicentre, Kitchener-raised Mike Shannon has been a funky force to be reckoned with, both at home and abroad for over 15 years. His DJ career took off along the Detroit-Toronto axis, where he devised a signature that straddles quivering techno, hypnotic jazz and buttery deep house – a sweeping musical vision that remains integral to his sound. Shannon quickly added the qualifiers 'producer' and 'label owner' to his resumé upon moving to Montréal in the late nineties; he contributed to the homegrown minimal techno explosion by launching record label Cynosure and the more experimental Revolve Recordings (the latter with Jeff Milligan). As head A&R for the esteemed Cynosure, he’s helped boost the profile of like-minded artists such as Deadbeat, Akufen and Ernesto Ferreyra. He has released three albums to date on some of techno’s most notable imprints (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~scape), while continuing to blur tonal lines with his sultry, downtempo jazz trio Blue Fields (with Takeshi Nishimoto and Fadila) and an upcoming live act with German house pal DeWalta. After celebrating Cynosure’s 10th anniversary at MUTEK five years ago, Shannon returns with a new live set, to do what he does best: transcend techno clichés.

SOMA offers an evolving exploration of sounds ranging from moody minimal through dub-tinged house cuts through more raw tech-styled tracks. Hailing from Sydney but no stranger to Adelaide, SOMA has spun across a variety of parties, festivals, and club events over the years. He’s run his own parties across the Comfort Club brand and released a few productions on close friend’s label Jozzman Trax from Melbourne. These days SOMA isn’t quite the clubrat he used to be but still has a deep-seated passion for discovering, mixing, and making his own blend of euphoria blessed deep and dubby house music. This mix sits perfectly for a rainy afternoon, enveloping you slowly before lifting off into the stratosphere.

This is a live recording made with my iPhone during a set I played at Sonnenraum, Berlin on August 12, 2024. Every Monday, after the live performance by 'The Omniversal Earkestra Band,' some DJs play experimental, very deep, or similarly eclectic music.

On this particular night, Dandy Jack played for the first hour, and then I took over until the end. They usually close around 2:00 or 2:30(depends), but that night, they let me play until 4:00 am. It was such a wonderful time with beautiful people. I started with a chill vibe for the first hour and gradually shifted the mood.

The concept for these Monday nights is 'like someone's living room,' and I've hosted a party with the same concept in Tokyo every Monday for the past five years.

Since this is a recording from my iPhone, the sound quality isn't perfect, but I hope you can still enjoy the musical journey with me.

Losoul, his name instantly brings to mind associations with minimal or microhouse, of reduction and continuity, and consequently the now held legendary label Playhouse. This rings true for the early generation of electronic music lovers in particular but those that followed too, although Losoul is a most discrete legend.

Some still recall that Berlin is deeply rooted in Frankfurt with artists, who would later move on to form labels like Perlon and various more. Founded in 1993, Playhouse pre-dates those and Peter Kremeier alias Losoul would become one of the imprint’s key players alongside Isolée, Villalobos and others.

The sound they pushed was coined microhouse by music journalist Philipp Sherburne first and Playhouse came to define a new music genre for all subsequent labels such as Perlon, Kompakt, Spectral Sound, Force Tracks, and fabric to name a few.

Zip is co-founder of the label Perlon, is familiar with the dancefloors around the world and famous for his tremendous minimal shifts within the 4/4 scheme. He has an illustrious musical history which began in 1986 as singer in the band Second Voice. In 1992 he moved to Frankfurt and joined the EBM band Bigod 20. After several releases the band split. In 1996 he got together with Markus Nikolai and Chris Rehberger to form the audio-visual project Pile. In 1997 he and Nikolai founded the Perlon label, on which he has released under the pseudonyms Dimbiman, Pantytec (with Sammy Dee) and Narcotic Syntax (with James Dean Brown). In 1999 the SuPERLONgevity compilation was released, featuring 'Bushes', a track that has since garnered chart-topping remixes from the likes of Derrick Carter and Fatboy Slim.

Zip also recorded with Peter "Baby" Ford and has appeared on Ford's label PAL SL. He is a regular guest DJ in clubs around the world and holds residencies at Robert Johnson (Offenbach) and the Panorama Bar (Berlin). He participates in the Narod Niki project, occasional collective laptop live jams initiated by Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin. He has released tracks and remixes on Perlon, Playhouse, Force Inc, Novamute and others.
