RT010 DKSTR - Cloak And Dagger EP
Heikki Sillanpää aka DKSTR, the Finnish earl of stupid, simple and slow, gives us a marvellous skweee ep full of heavy drums, lofi chip and synth boasting.
Written on foreign ground on the soils of Canada, the ep was named after and seemingly inspired by a local Irish pub in Toronto, Ontario.
Cloak And Dagger, despite not being an album, feels a bit like a short journey, quite possibly taken on a patio or sitting around a table with a group of people who all take turns humorously admitting to being alcoholics.
The story shoots off from the ascending intoxication of Mortars, through the slumbering and silly soundscapes of Välikuolema (translation: “The death in between”), to the determined and gloomy emotions of Turma (translation: Bane), which, like any other great night at the bar, leads to Vices. A very odd state of where you should find your way home quick or you will end up making some bad decisions on an epic scale.
DKSTR is an electronic musician, sound designer and game developer from Helsinki. He loves punk, beer, gyros and running his own game company. Previously DKSTR has released on Harmönia and Flogsta Danshall.

Yep we've got all the Finnish funk you could want. For those that don't remember,  skweee  was the genre that emerged on 7" singles from Scandinavia in the mid-2000s based on all-analogue equipment, full of lurching basslines and g-funk synth leads - supported by  Kode 9 , oddly paralleling the hyperfunk of Joker and Rustie that was emerging around the same time, and presaging a lot of the hardware-led "outsider" sounds of the 2010s. But it never went away, and most of its major names are still pumping out the wiggly-worm noises - not least  V.C. , who as this dancehall-powered beast shows, is still  firing on all cylinders . It comes from the  Black Squirrel White Castle EP  out on Raha & Tunteet on the 25th May.

Finnish producer V.C. – a pioneer of the Scandinavian-born sound of skweee – has been hard at work for years now making synth-based funky beats with hip hop aesthetic for labels like Flogsta Danshall, Donky Pitch, and Ramp Recordings.

Next week his first release in over two years – Black Squirrel White Castle EP – lands on his own label Raha & Tunteet. Five original tracks complete with funky synth, low subs, bass and beats with flavors of dancehall and V.C.‘s favorite skweee, are accompanied by a remix from our Dutch favorite FilosofischeStilte.

Speaking of the remix: you can hear it first, right after the break. By now we’ve learnt to not expect anything but greatness from FilosofischeStilte, and the three-minute mark on this one is divine.

In the Spring of 2012 Yöt teamed up with Scottish born vocalist Soom T (Mungos Hi-Fi). The product of this recording session? The first track on Yöt 4; the moody epic funk shuffle beat banger 'The Cure'. Rising synths, tough beats and heaps of squelch all pushed up against Soom T's unmistakable flow. A sure shot was born.

As well as vocal and instrumental versions of 'The Cure' Yöt 4 features the grinding slow tempo burner 'Day Won' and hypnotic ballad 'G.I.M.P'. To record the EP the core four piece signed up a fifth member, multi-instrumentalist Markus Pyörälä. It follows up last years 'Bitch Bender', which Mixmag made Album of the Month, and drops on Harmonia and Losonofono.
